Acacia Trees

Acacia trees are famous for the Biblical accounts which state that the wood was used to build the Ark of the Covenant, the Tabernacle in the Wilderness and the altar of God (Exodus 25 - 38).

"Solitary trees, if they grow at all, grow strong"

Winston Churchill

The acacia tree often grows as a solitary tree in the deserts of Africa, Egypt, Israel and Australia. One famous acacia, the Tree of Ténéré, grew in Nigeria 250 miles (400 km) from any other tree. The secret to that tree's survival was that its roots had tapped into water at 131 feet (40 m) below ground level. Unfortunately, the tree was vandalized in 1973 and is no more; but a water well in the desert now marks the place where it stood.

Almond Tree Images

Ornaments of almond tree blossoms made of gold were used to top the seven branches of the oil lamp, Menorah, used in the Biblical Tabernacle in the Wilderness and in the Temple in Jerusalem (Exodus 25, 37). Because of this, the almond tree is considered to have spiritual qualities.

Almond trees are native to the Middle East, where they have been cultivated for more than 5,000 years. The nuts of the wild tree are toxic; the nuts of the sweet, domesticated tree are not.

Today, more almond trees are grown in the United States than in any other country.

Apples are the world's favorite fruit and the apple tree is believed to be the first fruit tree cultivated by man. The apple tree pictures below feature apple trees in spring, summer and the fall harvest.

The apple tree is native to China and China is the world's largest producer of apples. When brought to the New World, the apple quickly became America's favorite fruit and the apple pie became a symbol of American culture. The U.S. is now the world's second highest producer of apples.

The apple tree is a glorious tree and if you don't have one, you should plant one this year.

Banana Tree Pictures

Actually, the banana is more of a plant than a tree. But, it grows as tall as a tree and that is why it is, more often than not, commonly referred to as a tree.

Also, banana plants can live more than 100 years, just like trees.

These make great ornamental additions to a garden, even if you don't want the fruit. And, they are fast growers!

The stately birch tree has swinging branches that touch the ground.

Most American children are familiar with the famous poem, Birches, written by Robert Frost in 1929. Frost admitted that he used to swing on the branches of birch trees on his father's farm. The poem ends with this line:

"One could do worse than be a swinger of birches."

Cedar Trees

Cedar trees have been valued since ancient times for their scented wood.

Cedar trees are mentioned 100 times in the Bible and cedar wood was used to build the houses of King David and of King Solomon, 3,000 years ago. Cedar was also used to build the Temple of God in Jerusalem. The cedars used were imported from Lebanon from the famous cedar groves which still exist on the hills of Lebanon (2 Chronicles 2:8).

Eucalyptus Tree

The eucalyptus tree (also called the gum tree) is native to Australia, but was exported throughout the world beginning in 1770. It is harvested for wood and also for the oil it produces, which has many uses.

Because it is a water-intensive tree, it has been used in several countries to drain swamp lands. It was imported in Israel for that purpose. In Israel, the eucalyptus tree is now being cultivated with biotechnology to be a source of fuel.

Though only recently introduced to Israel, the eucalyptus tree has developed a fan base in the country and it is often the subject of poems and songs. In 2012, the Ministry of Agriculture conducted a survey for the nation's Arbor Day holiday (Tu B'Shvat) to identify 'the most Israeli tree.' Unbelievably, the eucalyptus tree won by a huge margin of votes.

Fig Tree Pictures

Fig trees (or ficus trees) come in over 1,000 varieties. The trees bearing edible figs are among the first trees cultivated by humans.

Beginning with the account of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, figs are mentioned 163 times in the Hebrew Bible. The fig tree is indigenous only to the Mediterranean region, but it now grows throughout the world.

It was first planted in the New World when it was brought to Mexico in 1560 CE.

The fig tree pictures below include some of the oldest and most famous fig trees in the world.

Olive Tree Pictures

The olive tree branch has been the universal symbol of peace because of the Biblical reference of the dove carrying a fresh olive leaf to Noah's ark, indicating that the flood waters had receded (Genesis 8:11).

The olive tree and the oil produced from its fruit are mentioned over 200 times in the Hebrew Bible. Olive oil is a necessary ingredient for many of the Biblical rituals and, therefore, will always be a cultivated tree in Israel.

The tree is native to the Middle East but quickly spread throughout Mediterranean countries in ancient times.

Olive trees are among the world's oldest living trees.

Bristlecone Pine Trees

The bristlecone pine tree lives exclusively in six western American states. The species produces the oldest living pine trees, which grow in a protected environment in the Inyo National Forest in eastern California. There they survive at an altitude which precludes most vegetation, at more than 11,000 feet (3,352 m) above sea level. The trees live right at the edge of the tree line, in alkaline soil and with little rainfall. This stunts their height but can produce a massive trunk girth.

The Patriarch Tree, pictured below, is the largest bristlecone with a trunk measuring more than 37 feet (11 m) in diameter.

One of the oldest trees in the world lives in this forest; it is a bristlecone named Methuselah, after the Biblical patriarch known for his longevity (Genesis 5:27). The tree is believed to be more than 4,750 years old. Because of an arson attack to the park's Schulman visitor center in 2008, the location of the Methuselah Tree is not disclosed.

In 2013, an even older tree was found in the national forest: a bristlecone pine tree which is believed to be 5064 years old. This places the bristlecone in competition for the world's oldest tree, vying with ancient olive trees in Turkey and Lebanon.

Spruce Tree Pictures

Spruce trees are often confused with pine trees. Both species are evergreen conifers and have cones. However, the foliage is quite different. The needles of a spruce tree are only about 1 inch (2.54 cm) long. Pine tree needles average about 4 inches (10.16 cm) in length.

There are more than 40 kinds of spruce trees, all growing in northern regions throughout the world. In Alaska, some varieties grow more than 200 feet (60 m) tall.

Wood from the spruce tree is the wood of choice for making guitars and paper.

The most popular ornamental spruce trees among home gardeners are the Norway spruce and the blue spruce; both are pictured below.

Now on the first day you shall take for yourselves the foliage of beautiful trees, palm branches and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days.

Leviticus 23:40

Weeping Willow Trees

Like the palm, the willow tree has a prominent place in the Bible where its branches are a requirement for the observance of the Sukkot festival (Leviticus 23:39-41).

Know for its pliable wood, willow trees have been used for millennia to make baskets and furniture (wicker).

The medicinal quality of the bark was known to ancient man to relieve pain, swelling and fever. Today, the willow tree medicine is produced as acetylsalicylic acid, the common aspirin.

This is a very extensive article on all kinds of trees. It's nice that you included Biblical perspectives on some of the trees. I didn't know that apple trees are native to China. I thought they were American.

Hi Ologsinquito! I don't think many people know that apple trees are not native to the western hemisphere. They are certainly abundant there now. Thanks for your comment.

You have some beautiful photos here, Writer Fox! I especially love the flame and willow trees. I had no idea there were so many almond trees in the US. Pinning this and voting up and beautiful, useful!

Thank you, Flourish. The almond trees in spring are gorgeous. I'm so glad that you pinned one of those pictures.

My kind of Hub; love the pictures. Wish I had the 1000 words they are worth; but voting up and sharing.

It must have taken you all day to write this Hub and include over 200 photos! I just wrote a Hub about becoming an Oak tree after death. I was lucky to have a photo of an old oak tree I took while in Georgia that I used.

How do we get to this site for free tree photos? Did I miss something in the Hub.

Voted UP, etc. will share and Pin to my Tree board.

Thank you Jackie. These really are awesome pictures that represent the majesty of this planet. Thanks for the vote!

Mary615: Actually, this collection took several years to compile. If you want to use one of these pictures on a webpage, just send me an email and tell me which one and I'll forward the details.

Trees have a beauty all their own. I enjoyed looking at species of trees that I've never seen before.

This is a very useful collection of free pictures, Writer Fox! There are so many photos in the collection. I can understand why it took you such a long time to gather them! The hub is a great resource for people who need a photo of a tree. The facts are interesting, too.

This is an exceptional hub, Writer Fox! Wow, the amount of trees on this page is outstanding and each one is taken so well! This hub will be very useful to many, I'm sure. It must have taken you such a long time to compile this, you must have visited so many places to obtain the pictures.

My favourite trees are the redbud, flowering pear tree and weeping willow. There is something about trees that are so mystical and almost have a magical quality to them. You captured this essence perfectly in your photos. This hub reminded me of how beautiful nature is!

You are a very talented photographer. Loved this! Voted useful, beautiful and shared.

      Hi Susi,

I'm so glad you enjoyed this collection. You picked three of my favorite trees, too. I love the redbud and flowering pear in the spring and I love the weeping willow all year round. I've had many willow trees and redbuds on land I have owned.

I didn't take all of these pictures. Many were taken by friends who are also nature lovers. Some of these photos remind me so much of Joyce Kilmer's line from the poem featured above in the video:

"Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree."

Thanks for the vote and for sharing!

Hi Writer Fox What lovely pics of trees. They look so elegant, especially the flowering trees and the palm tree. The descriptions added a lot to the pics, giving additional information. I wish I could learn to recognize more trees. My favorite is the cherry tree, as I love cherries, and the palm trees remind me of the busy Florida beaches. Excellent job. Sharing Blessings, Audrey

      Hi Audrey,

I love the cherry tree and palm tree photos, too. So many of those species of trees are grown because people love cherries, coconuts and dates. Thank you so much for your comment!

What an excellent selection of tree photos Writer Fox. And useful not merely as a collection of photos for personal use (thanks for that) but also as an aid to identification of trees. It must I think be one of the finest sets of tree photos on a single Internet page anywhere.

Not sure which my favourite photograph is, but as far as favourite trees are concerned, the Flame Tree - Delonix - takes some beating for colour.

Interesting that the Oak Tree is America's national tree - it is also the national tree here in England and in the United Kingdom. Voted up. Alun.

Hi Greensleeves: I love that Flame Tree, too. Talk about vibrant, show-stopping color – that tree gets my vote!

I didn't know that the oak was the national tree in England! Thank you for adding that information. I appreciate your comments and vote.
