Muslim Marvel Superheroes
1. Ms. Marvel
Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American, daughter of the Yusuf and Muneeba Khan. She has an older brother named Aamir Khan. She first appeared in Captain Marvel #14 on August 2013.
Kamala always felt different and was often mocked by her peers for her nerdy interests and her religious background. She found escape in video gaming, fan fiction and above all, Superheroes. Her favorite, Captain Marvel.
She gained the power of shape-shifting when a strange Terrigen Mist hit upon the city awakening her inhuman genes. Not only that, she has the power of healing, can extend her limbs and alter her appearance.
Sooraya Qadir is mutant born in Afghanistan, associated with the X-Men. She was created on December 2002 and first appeared in New X-Men #133 .
She discovered her sand power when an attacker tried to rip off her niqab, a garment she states she wears out of free will and not because of the Talibans. This, of course is a very controversial piece of clothing in the western world and something she struggled with during her time with the X-Men which can be seen in her stories.
Monet St. Croix is a mutant born in Sarajevo, Bosnia during a family ski trip and is the second child of the rich Monegasque Cartier St. Croix. She is the first muslim female who first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #316 on September 1994.
She was a spoiled rich kid as a result of being the favorite child of her father. She gained her mutant ability of superhuman strength, speed, enhanced vision, flight, heightened hearing, healing power, telepathy and telekinesis when her older brother who is also a mutant (Emplate) transformed her into a mute red skinned body for all her cruelty towards him over the years.
Along with dealing with her brother and Islamophobia, she is definitely an interesting character to check out.
4. Arabian Knight
Abdul Qamar was born in Aqabah, Saudia Arabia and is the first muslim male who appeared in Incredible Hulk #250 on August 1980.
He was a Bedouin prince who rose to power over his nomadic family but would often leave to trade goods in cities. Once, he discovered a magic scimitar and flying carpet which belonged to the thirteenth-century ancestor who was a champion to his people. He then decided to carry on his ancestor's tradition by battling evil.
He made his last appearance in Thunderbolts #55 on October 2001 where he was killed during the Iraqi invasion in Saudi by Human Sapien who drained the life force out of him
5. Arabian Knight 2
Navid Hashim is a Palestinian born in Nazareth, Israel. He left Israel to enter the service of the Saudi Arabian government and first appeared in Union Jack Vol2 #1 on November 2006.
He posses the normal human strength and wears a special costume made from the previous knight's slash. He also has a magic carpet that responds to his mental commands.
Dr. Faiza Hussain was born in London, England to Pakistani immigrants, Dr. Yusuf and Dr. Farida Hussain. She first appeared in Captain Britain and MI-13 #1 on July 2008.
She gained the power of immobilizing and disassembling people during the time of the Skrull invasion when one of the Skrull war machine blasted.
The Excalibur is a fabled sword of King Arthur. Dr. Faiza Hussain became the new master of the sword when she took it from the stone where Captain Britain left it after his victory of defeating the Skrulls.
She too has to deal with Islamophobia on a daily basis.
7. Black Widow
Monica Chang was the second black widow after Agent Romanoff and was created on December 2009, making her appearance in Ultimate Comics Avengers #3.
She was an Asian-American who started off as a S.H.I.E.L.D agent and got married to Nick Fury. They both had a child named Julius Chang. However, the marriage only lasted for about 6 months 2 weeks and 5 days when she found out that Nick has slept with many of her female friends before as well as her mother.
Monica was a trained spy and has talent in both martial arts and marksmanship. She was also shown as a capable leader and strategist as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D
She was killed by Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) in Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #3 on September 2014, who grabbed her head and ignited his fist which burned her face off eventually killing her.
8. G.W Bridge
George Washington Bridge made his appearance in X-Force #1 on August 1991. He was a member of a group called Wild Pack which was later known as Six Pack and also became a major of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Due to the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D Bridge no longer had money to feed his wife and her child. He was later abducted by some criminals and was killed in Punisher Vol-8 #10 on December 2009, as a sacrifice for the resurrection of Frank Castle (Microchip) and his family.
9. Black Captain America
Isaiah Bradley made his first appearance in Truth: Red,White & Black #1 on January 2006. He grew up in New York CIty. When he met Faith Sharbazz, they both fell in love and got married in 1940.
During their honeymoon in Queens, the Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese which led the United States of America into war in which Isaiah joined.
After losing the secrets of the Super Soldier Serum along with the death of Dr. Erskine, the US Army still wanted to produce more like Steve Rogers. They forcibly recruited 300 African-Americans soldiers as a test subject. Only few survived including Bradley. To keep the operation running, families were sent letters informing of the death of the soldier's deaths.
He gained the power of peak human strength, speed, stamina, durability, reflexes, agility, healing, senses and longevity.
Bradley went on a suicide mission to kill Dr. Kosh wearing the Captain America costume and shield. He was later saved by a group of German freedom fighters.
After being rescued from Germany, he was given life prison for stealing the Captain America costume. In his 17 years of solitary confinement, his mind and body slowly started to detoriate due to the side effects of the Super Soldier Serum.
He was only released after Faith continously wrote letters to the President every month in 3 years. He was released on the day of Kennedy inauguration and swore to secrecy.
Josiah Al-Hajj Sadiq is the son of Isaiah and Faith Bradley. He has a sister named Sarah Gail Bradley and made his appearance in Crew #1 on July 2003. Compared to the other muslim superheroes, he has the most complicated story.
He was placed on a train by his mother and sister with a note "My name is Josiah."
He grew up in a Catholic orphanage outside of Boston during the early years of his life. Here, he was hopeless and was taught to worship God. When Josiah's power began to show up, he shoved Sister Irenia by mistake. Thinking she is dead, he ran off and enlisted himself in US Army under the name of Josiah Smith.
During his time in the Army, he found out about his background parents and the Super Soldier Serum which he genetically inherited from his father.
Eventually, he discovered his Islamic faith and found purpose in it. He completed Hajj which is the traditional Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca and came back to confess the murder of Sister Irenia. To his surprise, she was alive and healthy.
Josiah became a Muslim Minister and opened up a Mosque in Little Mogadishu in Brooklyn. And often visited his parents.
