Lyrics that Survive - A tribute to Bob Marley
Car Glove Box Changes Vibe!
Sick of the radio, rifling through the car glovebox I happened to find Survival by Bob Marley which I've had for years and playing it I got taken back to those days when Bob was The Man to be listening to and to be playing -yes I played in a band - for Jah people. Yes, I admit I did have natty dreads back then and I make no excuse for them.
A little Background
Dreads are rumored to represent the mane of the lion of Judah.
The other story about dreads is that they come from Kenya. During the time of the independence struggle, pictures of Kenyans with dreads fighting for their rights got back to Jamaica.
Life seemed uncomplicated back in the days of Bob and his music was very much a part of our community.
I've always been a little Afrocentric...probably because my birth place(without giving too much away) lies in the north of that continent!
Ethiopia has great significance for Rastas or Rastafarians and Marley, through Reggae music and his lyrics, can be considered a spokesperson for the religion which has it's roots in Ethiopia and the prophet Marcus Garvey.
The Emperor of Ethiopia at the time, Halie Selassie, was considered a Black Messiah and his real name was Ras (Prince) Tafari Makonnen. When he was Emperor, he donated the land of Shashamane for West Indians and many settled there.
Selassie visited Jamaica in 1966.
So coming back to Hubpages where I know I'm talking to the right people I just wanted to make a space for The Man.
What a genius.
"Live if you wanna live Rastaman vibrations, yeah Positive That's what we got to give"
and later in the same song...
"If you get down and quarrel ev'ryday you're saying prayers to the devil I say"
"Jam's about my pride and truth I cannot hide too keep you satisfied.True love that now exist is the love I can't resist so jam by my side.."
Coming In From The Cold
"...In this life, in this oh sweet life, we're coming in from the cold.."
"When one door is closed, don't you know the other is opened?"
"The biggest man you ever did see was once just a baby"
"You running and you running and you running away...but you can't run away from yourself"
"Every man thinkest his burden is the heaviest.."
"Na,na,na,na,na, we're the survivors, yes, the black survivors...Some people got everything;some people got nothing, some people got hopes and dreams, some people got ways and means..."
"...Black survivors. Together now..."
Could You Be Loved
"...Don't let them change you, or even re-arrange you..."
"We've got a mind of our own....so go to hell if what your thinking is not right..."
"The road of life is rocky, and you may suffer too, so while you point your fingers, someone else is judging you.."
"Could you be, could you be,could you be loved"
"..no matter how you treat him, the man will never be satisfied.."
"Through the roads of creation, we're the generation who trod through great tribulation..."
"Jah come to break down 'pression, rule equality, wipe away transgression, set the captives free.."
"Until the philosophy which holds one race superiour and another inferior is finally and permanently discreditd and abandoned every where is war is a war..."
So Much Trouble
"The way earthly things are going anything can happen You see men sailing on their ego trips, blast off on their spaceship million miles from reality no care for you , no care for me..."
"So you think you've found a solution but it's just another illusion.."
"cause we're moving right out of Babylon..."
Waiting in Vain
"From the very first time I placed my eyes on you, girl, my heart says "Follow through. But I know now I'm way down on your line, but the waiting deal is fine..."
"...So don't treat my like a puppet on a string,'cause I know how to do my thing.Don't talk to me as if you think I'm dumb...I don't wanna wait in vain..."
No Woman,No Cry
"..Good friends we have oh good friends we've lost along the way..."
"...In this bright future, you can't forget your past so dry your tears I say..."
"Everything's gonna be alright. Ev'ry thing's gonna be alright..."
Wake Up and Live
Wake up and Live Now...Life is one big road with lots of signs, so whenyou're riding throught the ruts, don't you complicate your mind.Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy. Don't bury your thought, put your vision to reality.."
Forever Loving Jah
"We found a way to castaway the fears forever, yeah..."
Is this Love
"I want to love you and treat you right ...So, I throw my cards on your table..."
Do yourself a favor if you don't own a Bob Marley Album. The reggae beat is one of the most easy to listen to and the emphatic bass lines are very relaxing. Your speakers need to be able to handle bass really well for you to feel the full effect though without distortion.
