What Is Gangnam Style? English Lyrics And Dance Steps

Updated on August 20, 2012

If you haven’t seen the video of “Gangnam Style” already, I suggest taking a look at it underneath this paragraph. The song was a huge success in Korea but gained international attention when it went viral on Youtube on July 15 2012. It reached number one in the KPOP Top 100 billboard charts. It popularity is most likely due to it funny horse style dancing, and random moments in the music video. Many have compared the song and video to LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem”.

The Video Itself

But What Does It Mean?

What is Gangnam Style? Gangnam is a very affluent district of Seoul South Korea, it can be comparable to Beverly Hills in the United States. When the singer Park Jae Sung or PSY says “Oppa Gangnam Style” he is telling a woman that he has a very cool and rich persona in an attempt to impress her. Gangnam style is similar to Westerns sayings such as SWAG and YOLO. The song is also about how women in Gangnam act prim and proper during the day but are wild and fun during the night.

Dance Covers

Look at these talented people who are doing the Gangnam Style choreography.

Learn The Dance!

After watching those dance covers I bet you're eager to learn the dance yourself. Impress all your friends and get a work out by learning the Gangnam Style Dance.

This is very nice and detailed but unfortunately she only teaches half of the dance.

Another Version

There is another version of Gangnam Style featuring Hyuna who made a cameo near the end of the original Gangnam style video. It’s called “Oppa Is My Style”, Hyuna plays a girl from Gangnam and this version is her reply to PSY’s original Gangnam Style. It’s not as well praised compared to the original song; most of the criticism comes from Hyuna’s high pitch squeaky voice. But fans replied that Hyuna was making fun of girls who live in Gangnam.

Hi Olivia yes Gangnam is a place, but the term "Gangnam Style" is a saying he made up to mean "cool" or "look at me I'm rich", kinda like the Western sayings.

Gangnam is a place - he parodies the wasteful lifestyle they live there. So what the hell does SWAG and YOLO have to do with it? There's no similarity at all. It's like saying that a book is similar to a computer..
