What is Milking and Other Internet Trends

Got Milk?

Moooove over planking! If you missed out on last year's planking and owling craze, here is a new trend that does a body good. Started by a group of students in the United Kingdom, milking involves purchasing a half gallon of milk from your favorite grocer and simply pouring it over your own head in public. Milkers say that they "milk" publically for the shock value.

They Milkers prefer to quench their need for attention in front of famous landmarks such as Exhibition Park at Newcastle University. Each incident of milking is video taped for prosperity and world enjoyment. Anyone can do it. Just get the camera rolling, pour the milk over your head, and be sure to capture your antics on video tape.

Milking is popular with young students in Newcastle and the trend has even inspired some businessmen to join in. Conspiracy theorists are already blaming local dry cleaners for starting the strange craze.

Milkers have the option of choosing to douse themselves with whole, 2%, or skim milk. At an average of $7.00 per gallon, milkers are discouraged from using organic milk for this stunt.

Local economists are already predicting a milk shortage in the UK as it is flying off the shelves at an alarming pace. Grocers are suggesting the milkers consider using powdered coffee creamer and Kool-Aid as an alternative.

While this trend is all in fun, the public remains appalled at the idea. Many who criticize the practice state that it is insulting when considering that child hunger is a world-wide epidemic. Many state that milk is commodity to be reserved and not wasted for such a prank. Weigh in with your opinion.

I agree with Sue Bailey. What people will do for attention is just ridiculous. I also really enjoyed reading your hub, you're pretty funny.

What a waste - of time and milk. I sometimes wonder just how daft we are getting in the UK. Enjoyed your hub though.

It's too bad they're not standing in a pool or something to collect the milk then they could at least take a bath in it. I guess it's just as silly as the milk mustache that is so popular here. Personally I'm not much of a milk drinker so I guess using it to make a statement is just as good as any. I just wish it was tied to some sort of activism to make the world a better place : )

Milk was poured in large amounts into the Gulf of Mexico in the 1940s/1950s to drive up the price on the remaining product. Now in the 2010s, we just pour it over our heads. And then, there was Coca Cola company that invented an artificial cow's milk undetectible from real milk, to be sold in the USSR only. America and UK have too much milk drama, wouldn't you say? :)

Never heard about it. What a waste! I would rather put the milk in the bath tub and take a cleopatra bath. Anyway, it looks funny. Thanks for informing me this internet craze. Voted up and shared. BTW, Happy New Year.

When I first heard about this my first thought was "Ew! Now you're all covered with milk in a public place!" I mean, wouldn't it get all crusty and gross before you can get home to wash up?

A funny look at this strange meme =)

Ha ha this a great one to see for some much needed humor this morn. Those Brits sure can be nutters- but lovable ones. Seems to mostly be a young male thang. When you think about it a bit of a brave one too, considering the time of year- brrrr!

Tammy, You've out done yourself again. Very entertaining and funny. However if you put a video of yourself "Milking", like the people in the video, I'm sure you would get rave reviews!

      Love it!

Yeah, I will weigh in and say this is a sad, wasteful ploy for attention.

I am sure people who are starving are so not amused. Thank you, Tammy... I am always interested in societal this case, one with absolutely no merit.

Voted UP and Interesting. Hugs, Maria

rasta.i cant quite agree with your viewpoint...but i do understand it. i cant help but cringe when i see and hear of such waste knowing how many people go without in this world. and i do fully agree with you on the spoilt milk like to see them have the guts to do that.

    • rasta1 profile image

Marvin Parke 5 years ago from Jamaica

@tlmcgaa70 . That's not how feeding the hungry works. Each individual person has to buy the food and take it to the chosen person who needs it. That's how I do it. I do not worry myself about that left over Turkey that gets thrown out by the wealthy. I did not buy it. I have to do what I can do as an individual, since only I and I control I charity effort. And what about the calves?

@everyone. I couldn't do this in Jamaica. I would be mobbed, beaten and ridiculed. I could do it in First world countries where majority can afford milk and their is a surplus.

I wonder what happens to the spoilt milk in the fridge. The milkers should use that one. Now, that's provocative.

Wow - Not sure what to say about this. Hope my daughter does'nt decide to do this. What a waste of good milk. Fun hub!

    • tlmcgaa70 profile image

tlmcgaa70 5 years ago from south dakota, usa

rasta.have you no compassion for the hungry? whether you "like" milk or not doesnt change the fact that there are millions of starving people out there and for anyone to waste any food, especially in these is pure idiocy and selfishness. and milk is not bad for you unless you have allergies to it. most people who do not drink milk need to take calcium supplements. i grew up believing in waste not want not. people who waste food will someday be in need of it and not have it.

    • rasta1 profile image

Marvin Parke 5 years ago from Jamaica

I do not drink milk, so it does not bother me. It is very unhealthy to drink anyway. Most hair and skin products contain milk proteins anyway. It is sad that the calves do not get the milk. I will think about it, before doing it. (Just kidding)

I saw this on tv and thought it was crazy. Waste of good milk that some hungry person would love to have. It like brides destroying the wedding dresses for pictures. One bride even lost her life over it.

      Voted up.

this actually makes me angry. those idiots have no clue to what they are wasting. if they have the money to throw away like that it would by far be better spent helping those in need. makes me wonder how much brains our younger generation has...and how much capacity for compassion.

Hi tammyswallow. Yes here in britain, we do have our share of fun loving cracked pot attention seekers. It must be the opposite to some people who still see a brit as wearing a nice suit and bowler hat. LOL.

While it is entertaining, I must agree with you wholeheartedly fpherj48. Gasoline is even cheaper than a gallon of milk.. That is NOT a suggestion by the way. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

      Hi Tammy,

Planking and now milking . . .OMG what crazy stuff and I am certainly no prude but this is mental and such a waste. On the flip side the students could be doing alot worse and getting into drugs, binge drinking . . . Thanks for this tit bit of craziness!!

I had to read this as I had never hear of milking. I am constantly amazed at the antics of people and trying to understand them is useless. Great hub and learning about something new.

Tammy - To each generation the desire to express itself will be different from the previous. I have no objection to milking, or any other form of non violent protest. When we take away a person's ability to express themselves, we only lead ourselves into a molding of a herd of sheep. There's too many of them like that now. I say, "Go for it!" Interesting hub!

Although it looks very unappealing, Tammy, I can think of much worse things these lamebrain folks could be pouring over their heads, like . . . nope, I don't think I'll go there. You get the idea I'm sure. :)

Tammy.....I sure don't enjoy being a party-pooper, but the waste here is unacceptable, IMO. I hope that these young people choose an alternative to real milk....which is much better used for nourishment. They need to walk through a city slum and see hungry children who could benefit greatly from the milk they are foolishly wasting on a game of sorts..........UP+++

This is just about as crazy as the Cinnamon Challenge where kids try and swallow cinnamon (I wrote a Hub about that). They choke, they spit. It is actually dangerous. I guess "milking" is not dangerous, just wasteful!

I am no longer surprised by the antics of my fellow human beings. It seems that we have no limits when it comes to doing things of a bizarre nature. I have never heard of it, and I'll never do it, but it is interesting to say the least. LOL Thanks for the head up, Tammy!
