Is this outfit creative genius or a fashion disaster?

Goldberg's Unusual Hat Makes Waves At 2011 Tony Awards In NYC

Whoopi Goldberg fashion disaster? Some viewers of the Tony Awards found themselves fixated on Whoopi Goldberg's hat, of all things.

Goldberg fashion controversy strikes again, as the popular comedian and talk show host finds herself back in the limelight due to... her giant, strange hat?

As unlikely as it may seem, the "Twitterverse" is currently fixated on Whoopi's fashion sense, causing her name to be trending on the site. If you've been wondering what is notable about the hat but haven't yet seen a picture of it, here it is in all it's otherworldly glory.

I must admit it's unusual looking, but is it unusual enough to justify the type of stir it is creating among Twitter users? Is an odd looking over-sized hat enough to warrant all this attention? And, more importantly, is this seriously an entire article devoted to Whoopi Goldberg's hat?

While some are still following the Russell Crowe circumcision controversey, others are engaged by Whoopi Goldberg's choice of dress to the 2011 Tony Awards which took place on June 12, 2011.

The hat might be pretty remarkable indeed, but upon contemplating the exotic accessory, one might be reminded of a time when Whoopi Goldberg's hat being a prime example of oddly artistic headgear was literally a trademark look. It was a time back in the... 24th century! Cue the music and Patrick Stewart narrative...

Deja Vu?

Here's What Others Are Saying:

KJintheCity:‎ "I really liked Whoopie Goldberg's hat. I could never wear it, but she looked great."

NyambiNyambi: "Whoopi Goldberg's hat will haunt me for the rest of my life."

Drsbello‎: "What the h*ll is Whoopi Goldberg wearing on her head, it looks like a demented witch's hat."

Abby Waters, The Examiner: "As a comedian she must have gone for funny, because she certainly did not go for fashion. Does she get satelite (sic) reception with that hat?"

Whoopi's No Stranger To Strange Hats

Let's not forget that Whoopi Goldberg made news last year for her "giant pirate hat" that she sported to a charity event in NYC. This hat, like the one she wore for the Tony Awards, also looks rather "Guinan-like", don't you think?

Liz Brown, a writer for the Examiner, provides this insightful quote from Goldberg about her unique look, directed at critics back in 2009:

"My style, who I am, it's not about my clothing," said Goldberg. "If I came in a burlap bag, I would still be Whoopi Goldberg and I've always been me, so you can kiss my ass."

Goldberg has maintained that people should be more focused on what she says rather than how she looks, and she certainly has created more controversy with her words than with her fashion, but something about her outrageous outfits seem to strike a chord with people, generating a lot of attention. Whether it's attention in the form of admiration for her bold style or incredulity at her wardrobe choices, Whoopi manages to captivate.

So, what do you guys think? Is this futuristic fashion forward or a blast from the past that should only be seen again in reruns?

Which strange hat is your favorite?

If you could make a suggestion to Whoopi, what would you recommend?

Are the hats just over-the-top or are they an appropriate representation of her fierce individuality?

I like the hat as it brought me back fond memories of TNG. I think Whoopie should have stayed with acting and leave talk show hosting with people trained in news. She's an entertainer and that is where she peaks. She peaks in the application of large UFO like hats and baggie, shapeless clothing as well.

Thanks SubRob7! Great minds think alike.

I was a huge of TNG myself, and Guinan was one of my favorite characters. Glad you enjoyed the read and thanks for following, too!

When I saw the small pic of Whoopie in the big hat I instantly thought--Yes! Star Trek the Next Generation! I loved that show, and especially loved the episodes when the mysterious Guinan appeared. Great hub Bud. Next I'll be clicking on your follow.

Thanks for the comment Jo. That's very true. I'm sure she is pretty smart at marketing herself. Perhaps the eccentric fashion style is part of that.

Voted funny and good for Whoopi for sticking up for herself.Frankly I like the pirate hat, not too excited about the hat she wore to the Tony Awards, but she sure knows how to get a reaction...maybe that's why she wears them.
