Who Might Be Godparents of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Baby?
Most babies have godparents. In the United States, parents select a set of godparents for their baby. It could be a couple or a single male or female.
Also, in the United States, siblings or other relatives can be godparents, but relatives cannot be godparents to royal babies. As much as Prince Harry loves children, he is not a godfather to his brother's children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte or Prince Louis.
There are different and very specific rules for the godparents of royal babies.
A godparent is someone chosen by the parents to take an interest in their child's upbringing and development. The godparent can also be a mentor for the child. In case something happens to the parents, the godparents can claim legal guardianship.
The godparents' duties are not limited to just giving the child gifts only on birthdays and Christmas.
A male godparent is a godfather. A female godparent is a godmother. The child is a godchild. If it is a boy, he is a godson. A girl is a goddaughter.
Royal Rules for Godparents
Parents can have as many godparents as they like for their child. In the Church of England, at least three godparents are required. Two females and one male should be godparents to a girl. Two males and one female should be godparents to a boy.
If Prince Harry follows the pattern of his brother and sister-in-law, he and Meghan will have up to seven or more godparents for their baby.
Prince George has seven godparents, Princess Charlotte has only five, and Prince Louis has six. That's a total of 18 godparents for the three children.
There are royal rules for selecting the ideal person to be a godparent.
- Usually, the godparent is not a close relative of the baby. Notice that Prince Harry is not a godfather of any of his brother's children.
- At least three godparents are required by the Church of England.
- The father should choose some of the godparents.
- The mother should some of the godparents.
- Godparents must be witnesses to the christening of the baby.
The Short List for Baby Sussex's Godparents
When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry on May 19, 2018, she had no maid of honor because she had too many friends to choose only one of them. That will not be the case when it comes to choosing godparents for her baby.
That's because she can choose more than one godparent. Also, Prince Harry can choose some godparents as well. Therefore, it is a good thing they can select more than one godparent.
Top of the Short List for Godparents for Baby Sussex
If the news is correct, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's baby will have some very famous godparents. At the top of the list are George and Amal Clooney, according to the Daily Mail.
Meghan and Amal have been friends for a long time. Amal and George attended the royal wedding back in May at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. That was not the last time the two couples were together.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited them in Lake Como shortly after their wedding. More than likely, they will be godparents, but the public will not know for sure until after the baby is born and is ready to be christened.

Other Possibilities for Godparents
The well-known actor and his lawyer wife are not the only ones who could be godparents to the new royal baby. Remember, there can be many godparents, and the required minimum number is three.
Jessica Mulroney is Meghan's best friend. She and her husband Ben were with Meghan and Prince Harry in Australia last October when they were on their royal tour. Jessica was not only Meghan's personal stylist, but her children were in the royal couple's wedding. Therefore, Jessica seems to be a shoo-in to be a godparent even if her husband is not.
Designer Misha Nonoo is a close friend of Meghan who might be considered for that prestigious role. She and her ex-husband Alexander Gilkes are the ones who introduced the royal couple to each other in 2016. Gilkes went to school with William and Harry. So, he might be a godparent as well.
Lindsay Jill Roth has a very good chance of being a godmother. Meghan was her maid of honor, and they are reportedly very close. They met in college at Northwestern University, and the women have been friends since then.
Jake and Zoe Warren are two of Harry's closest friends, and their daughter Zalie was a bridesmaid at his wedding. Princess Diana was Jake's godmother. So, it would be interesting if he would be a godfather to Harry's child.
Serena Williams and Meghan have been close friends since 2014. The tennis champion might have a chance of being one of the godmothers. Last September, Serena revealed that she and Meghan are often in touch and they rely on each other a lot.
Darren and Benita Litt are Meghan's friends. Their two daughters, Rylan and Remi were in the royal wedding. Besides, Meghan is their godmother. Therefore, it makes sense that she might ask the Litts to be her child's godparents.
Tom and Lara Hughes-Young are great possibilities. Tom and Harry have been longtime friends. Harry was Tom's best man at his wedding in Jamaica when he and Meghan were dating.
Priyanka Chopra wasn't on the list even though she and Meghan are friends. The above list is not an official one. No one will know for sure who the godparents will be until the baby is ready to be christened a few months after the birth next spring.
