Who Was The Most Successful Hokage?
The Hidden Leaf Village has seen many leaders, but which has been the most successful? This does not necessarily mean the strongest but who had the best impact on the village. Let’s take a look at all seven before deciding.
1. The First Hokage - Hashirama Senju
Hashirama was the first Hokage and founded the village. In doing so he also established the precedent for all the neighbouring lands to have one head village. Hashirama was an immensely powerful shinobi able to fight the infamous Madara Uchiha for 24 hours and win. Hashirama was able to use every nature form but was most famous throughout the lands for his Kekkei Genkai, the wood style jutsu. Using this he built much of the infrastructure of the village and also captured many of the tailed beasts and planned to give them to the other shinobi countries in order to bring peace at the first Five Kage Summit. Hashirama would later go on to give his title to his brother, Tobirama, making him the second Hokage.
2. The Second Hokage - Tobirama Senju
After taking over the position from his older brother Tobirama had a lot to live up to and he did not disappoint. Like his brother Tobirama was also mastered all five nature transformations but was famous for his total mastery of the water style. Tobirama also invented the Flying Thunder God jutsu and the Summoning: Impure Reincarnation jutsu as well as the shadow clone jutsu. Famed for his water style and being the fastest ninja of his time, Tobirama also established the Police Force and the ninja academy. He also founded the ANBU and the chunin exams which the other ninja villages also adopted. Tobirama died while distracting the Gold and Silver Brothers Kinkaku Force, allowing the rest of his squad escape. This team included the future Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi.
3. The Third Hokage - Hiruzen Sarutobi
Hiruzen Sarutobi was a genius and a prodigy. A testament to this would be the fact he shares the same nickname, “God of Shinobi”, with both Hashirama Senju and the Sage of Six Paths himself. Just like his predecessors, Sarutobi also had mastery over all five nature transformations and believed in the Will of Fire. Sarutobi later handed down his title of Hokage to Minato Namikaze before the Nine Tails attack on the village and helped drive the beast out of the village. After Minato sacrificed himself to seal the monster in his own son Hiruzen was forced to take up the position again. Sarutobi helped spread the Will of Fire to Narutos Generation of ninja before his death in his attempt to stop Orochimaru destroying the leaf village. The title was then given to Tsunade, his former pupil.

4. The Fourth Hokage - Minato Namikaze
“The Yellow Flash” was the Fifth Hokage. Minato became Hokage at a young age and sadly didn’t hold this positon for long. Minato was famous for his improvement on the Flying Thunder God jutsu developed by Tobirama, with even the jutsu’s creator claiming he used it better than himself, along with his own signature jutsu he invented, the Rasengan. With these skills he was feared by ninja from every village. The enemy were told to flee the moment they saw him, however this was usually too late. During the Nine Tails attack on the village Minato managed to defeat Obito and seal half the beast into his own son, Naruto. After his tragic death Hiruzen had to reclaim his title before he, too, died and it was passed onto Tsunade.
5. The Fifth Hokage - Tsunade
Tsunade was reluctant at first to become the next Hokage but was eventually swayed after meeting Naruto and fighting Orochimaru. Tsunade had high renown for her healing abilities and monstrous strength which she could use with deadly efficiency in battle. She later passed on her knowledge to Sakura and before her Shizune. Tsunade made sure the village was rebuilt after Orochimarus attack on the village and once again when Pain attacked the village. During Pains attack she also saved countless lives by using Katsuyu’s jutsu to protect the villagers. After the Fourth Shinobi War she passed her title to Kakashi.
6. The Sixth Hokage - Kakashi Hatake
Kakashi has many feats under his belt and sadly too many to list. In saying I will point out some of his most memorable throughout the series. Known as the “Copy Cat Ninja” due to his sharingan allowing him to copy a rumored thousand jutsu, Kakashi is definitely one of the most dangerous characters in the series. He also developed his own technique Lightning Blade, which got its name from when Kakashi supposedly used it to cut a bolt of Lightning in half. Kakashi helped defend the village during both attacks on the Hidden Leaf Village and helped train Team Seven. Kakashi later passed the tite of Hokage onto his student, Naruto Uzumaki.
7. The Seventh Hokage - Naruto Uzumaki
Where should I begin with Naruto…? Like Kakashi he also has too many accomplishments to list. What we do know about his reign is the village grew immensely into more of a city and not much more. We know that he helped save the world during the Fourth Shinobi World War and against the threat of Toneri and again the threat of Momoshiki. Also, he stoped Pain attack on the Hidden Village, which prevented the deaths of the people’s village. He also convinced Nagato to bring back to life all the ones who died by his commands, including Kakashi. These are the most important things to concentrate on and with this knowledge we can decide who the most successful Hokage was.
So who was the most successful Hokage? Again I remind you that this isn’t who the strongest Hokage is but the best. Who did the most for the village and the villagers, who made the biggest contributions, whose legacy was the most important?
The answer is, The Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. Hiruzen helped save the village twice and saved it from total destruction. Hiruzen also taught the next generation and the one to follow about the Will of Fire. This is without a doubt the most important legacy as it set up the next generations to following the footsteps of the previous Hokage and gave them the right mindset. Without his legacy this show wouldn’t have been able to continue to evolve and end up where it did in the end. Hiruzen stood for everything good in the Shinobi World and without him it would have been a very different world indeed.
