Who is Tessanne Chin? The Voice
This Jamaican superstar became an international star when she debuted on NBC’s The Voice in 2013. It is kind of ironic because Tessanne was a judge on a popular TV show that scouts for talent in Jamaica. Now she is the one being judged. However, the Voice provides a great platform to launch her international career. Jamaicans are very excited for her and it’s what everyone on the island is talking about.
Tessanne Chin is a native of the island of Jamaica. She is obviously from a multi-cultural background like most Jamaicans. The interesting thing about Tessanne is that she boasts Cherokee ancestry which is unusual on the Island. She has always been a celebrity in Jamaica. Most Jamaicans know her as that brave girl who ventured into alternative rock and roll. She also brings a reggae rock flavor to her many pursuits. Before she became popular as a singer, she was known as a song writer in the reggae circles. She was also a backup singer for the legendary Jimmy Cliff. Her sister Tami Chin is a major celebrity in Jamaica. Tami Chin even got a major record deal on Akon’s Konvict Muzik label. Therefore, at one point Tessane chin was living in the shadows of her sister. Her family has a rich reputation in music overall. Both of her parents were musicians in reggae/ska bands in their younger days.

The Music Career of Tessanne Chin
Tessanne’s musical career started with the reggae rock band called Mile High. This band was the most popular band in the Jamaica underground Rock and Roll scene. She eventually left the band to do a three year worldwide tour with Jimmy Cliff. After the tour, Tessanne concentrated on her solo career. She has managed to produce two hit singles in Jamaica which is a big deal. The global music industry is always paying attention to the hit songs in Jamaica.
Tessanne Chin Debuts on The Voice
The Jamaican crowd already knew that Tessanne Chin would have all four judges fighting over her. The bet in the streets was how many seconds it would take for all four chairs to turn. She got all chairs to turn in a record 28 seconds. Adam Levine said “You can easily win The Voice this Year”. Each of the judges took turns in flattering and wooing Tessanne. However, she eventually chose Adam Levine.
Tessanne’s Battle round on The Voice
The battle round for Tessanne was very intimidating. Adam put her up against Donna Allen who has a power house voice like Tina Turner. Donna is no Joke; Her voice is big and dominant with lots of top end range. Before the competition, everyone in Jamaica knew that Tessanne would not be able to hit high and difficult notes like Donna. Mrs Chin's only strategy would be to sing within her own range and execute properly.
During the battle, that is exactly what happened. Tessanne maintained her key and pitch while adding some versatility. Donna became over confident and overdid the song causing her to lose valuable points. It was a very hard battle because Tessanne went slightly above her range, which was still nowhere near Donna’s superb vocal ability. In the end, Tesssanne won the battle because of her self-control and quickly adapting to her environment.
Tessanne Chin in the Knockout Round
After facings stiff competition in the battle round from Donna Allen, Tessanne was given an easier opponent in the knockout rounds. I’m not saying that Ashley DuBose is not a good singer. Her rendition of Train’s “Soul sister” was okay. On the other hand, Tessanne’s rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” may be better than the original. The performance by Ashley was a bit nonchalant. She did not show off her vocal range. Tessanne was vocally stronger by alternating between high and low notes flawlessly. She will now move on to the live round of The Voice.
