Why Do you Listen to Music?

Updated on June 19, 2013

I am writing this in response to Ben BlackWell’s question in Q & A.

"Why do you listen to Music?"

Sometimes, I imagine how our world would be without Music. It would be like a garden with no flowers. Music is powerful, it makes people happy, can make people sad and actually has a healing effect. I enjoy various music.RnB, Soul, Jazz, Country but Not Rock and Heavy Metal. Must be my age. Apart from pleasure, I listen to Music for various other reasons:

1) As a Thought Shifter

If am happy, I will listen to music but if I am Sad, I use it as a Thought Shifter and it gets rid of any negative, gloominess I might have. Thought Shifters are a list of things you do when you feel down. You can make up your own.

2) Keeps me peaceful and I don't lose my marbles.

Example when driving In London If it’s peak time, I love listening to KenngG on the Sax. There is always that driver who signals to turn left, but turns right! etc. Keeps me sane.

3) To bring back a memory.

Some songs I associate with memories. Whenever I want to remember my Mum, I play the Carpenters because when I was young, she played them and I used to sing along reading the back of the Record Sleeve. In those days, we didn't have CDs.

4) Helps me clean the house.

When I listen to upbeat music with headphones I get a lot done quickly. It just motivates me.. Do you remember that Scene in the Movie Mrs Doubtfire when she/he was hoovering and dancing? That’s me when doing housework. Lol. If you haven’t seen it, watch the clip below.

5) To Sleep

We have a channel in UK, that plays just classical music and I turn it on very low when I am about to sleep. It helps me drift off and ofcourse I wake up to it. Nice and gentle. It treats me better than my Alarm Clock.

6) Drowns Out noise of Neighbours

Sounds bad, but I would rather do that, than knock on their door to ask them to keep the noise down. Thankfully, it doesn't happen often.

7) Preparing to pray

I have to pray everyday, not just when I need something. When, I don't feel like praying, I find that listening to a worship song prepares my heart to do so.

8) Checking out new Songs

I listen to music to see if it’s worth me buying the song or an Artists album. The radio is perfect for this or a friends Music Playlist.

Thank you Google

I think it’s wonderful that we can listen to songs for Free on Youtube and other sites, and also watch the videos. I hope google will not start charging for it.

This song keeps me peaceful when driving in Heavy Traffic

Cool hub, and the thought-sifter seemed interesting. I'm just wondering, do you listen to jazz artists such as Charles Mingus and John Coltrane?

You and I have this love of music in common Elena. I am such a lover of all kinds of music and I can't imagine what it would be like if we didn't have it. Like you, certain songs bring me back to times in the past~it's like re-living a moment in time. I listen to Jazz music during the day when I write. It keeps me inspired and uplifted. This Kenny G song is one of my favorites and I'm enjoying listening to it as I write. I thank you for a very enjoyable hub. Music for me is as vital as my writing. Hit many buttons and voted up on this great hub.

Elena, I've been here for an hour watching and listening to all the music on the videos. I can't imagine a day without music, it's been a part of my life starting at an early age. My mother was a music lover and dancer. She told me that i was tapping my feet when i was born. lol..Great hub...I'm not going to delete it because of the great videos. I listened to George Jones sing, ' Whose gonna fill their shoes. ' and of course had a good cry. I can't believe he's gone too. Thank you Dear one....

I guess I'm agreeing with your number 4 when I say that music gives me energy. Whenever my kinds came home from school and had chores to do, I'd turn off the TV, turn on the music and it was a real energy boost. Thanks for sharing your appreciation of music.

What great points about the role of music in our lives. I find I can't even wash the dishes without having some music on. Right now I have Pandora on to my Rammstein station (though Disturbed is on.) The only time I don't have music on (besides teaching or watching tv) is when I'm editing. I need total silence. Thanks for sharing!

Oh fine lady there are those that labor to look beautiful as you, there are those that labor to write as perfectly as you. But today you remind us that you are foremost a teacher of life. Thank you as I turn on Vivaldi Four Seasons for the reminder to keep love real and music close.

Great hub Elena. I like nothing better than putting in my earphones and just escaping into my music for an hour or two- no distractions, no disturbances. I never have music on in the background, just not my thing - it must be just me and the music together- must be a relaxation thing I think. :o)
