Woodstock - Mud, Fasting, and Rock 'n Roll

Updated on October 24, 2009

We are stardust
We are golden
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Joni Mitchell missed the party at Woodstock. She chose to appear on TV instead. She managed to capture the hippie flower-power free love essence musical transformation of the event in her seminal pop rock anthem based on the accounts of rockers who helicoptered in, performed, and flew out again.

I came upon a child of god
He was walking along the road

He was walking because the concert was so poorly planned that no cars could get within 6 miles of the stage.

And I asked him, where are you going
And this he told me
Im going on down to yasgurs farm

He was still sober, so he knew where he was going

I'm going to join in a rock n roll band

What is this, a rock n roll fantasy camp?

I'm going to camp out on the land

I'm going to skip bathing for 3 days and sleep in the mud

I'm going to try an get my soul free

I'm going to try and get my food free too

We are stardust

We are muddy stardust

We are golden

We are badly sunburned, but it's OK because UV rays haven't been discovered yet

And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

As long as the garden is a cow pasture

Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog

Trade in the smog for cow patties in Max Yazgur's fields

And I feel to be a cog in something turning

Welcome to the Machine

Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe its the time of man

Or maybe it's because I haven't eaten in 3 days

I don't know who l am

I lost my ID when I went down the mud slide

But you know life is for learning

I'm learning not to ingest every mystery drug passed down to me.

We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong

There's strength in mud.

And everywhere there was song and celebration

If you were close enough to the stage to hear the sound system

And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky

Nixon called off the air strike at the last minute

And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation

Like I said, free drugs.

We are stardust
Billion year old carbon
We are golden

We should have brought more Coppertone

Caught in the devils bargain

No, that's just the free toilet for 500,000 people

And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Don't worry. In 40 years this will all be forgotten. Or commercialized.

LOL. Funny . And the Joni person up top , this is entirely true what the article says about Joni Mitchell . ALL of the musicians were sell outs and proved to be money grubbing and NOT the idols and saints the hippies thought they were . I feel sorry for the hippies now . They seem to be getting what REALLY happened .

I thought this was mildly amusing. At least it's had more viewers than the movie.
