History of World Music Day

World music day is celebrated all over the world on June 21st. Australia, Britain, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany, China, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Colombia are a few of the several countries which celebrate the World music day. World music day is also known as ‘Faites de la Musique’ which means ‘make music.’ It is a festival that celebrates all kinds of music by all kinds of musicians.

History of World Music Day

The idea was first introduced in 1976 by American musician Joel Cohen, and then put forth by the national French radio station ‘France Musique’. Cohen proposed an all-night music celebration at the moment of the summer solstice. The idea was taken up by Maurice Fleuret, French Music and Dance director for Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, in 1981 and first took place in 1982.

The music festival intended to promote music in two ways:

  • Musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets.
  • Free musical concerts of all genres are made available to the public.

World Music Day Celebrations:

All over the world, World music day is celebrated in special ways. The slogan Faites de la musique and homophone Fete de la musique is utilized to make the music promotion. Several music concerts are arranged at free cost and music of all kinds are made accessible to the public.

On this day, the musicians can play music whole night without being scared and threatened by their neighbors to call the cop, since there is no restriction of noise on that day. Speeches of leading composers, musicologists and interpreters are arranged on this day, which provides lots of knowledge regarding music to the music lovers.

Several seminars, exhibitions, music competitions and quizzes are also arranged on this day. Delegations of musicians from other national committees are also invited to ask for their participation on World music day.

Main Objectives of World Music Day Celebrations

Some of the main objectives of World music day are:

  • To promote music in several ways.
  • To attract musicians of all genres on the same platform.
  • To encourage peace, harmony and friendship among people.
  • To share experiences between upcoming and renowned musicians.
  • Mutual admiration and respect of artistic values from the different cultures.

Awards for world music

Various awards have been presented in recent years to musical artists for their contributions to the genre of world music. BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music was introduced and sponsored by BBC Radio 3 from the year 2002.However, in March 2009, the BBC made a decision to axe the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music. In response to the BBC's decision to end its awards program, the British world music magazine Songlines launched the Songlines Music Awards in 2009 "to recognise outstanding talent in world music".

Today, mainstream music has adopted many of the features of world music.At the same time world music has been influenced by hip hop, pop and jazz.Public radio and web casting are an important way for music enthusiasts all over the world to hear the enormous diversity of sounds and styles which, collectively, amount to world music. On the other hand, some musicians and curators of music have come to dislike and criticize the term "world music".
