XXXHOLIC The Movie A Midsummer Night's Dream

Updated on December 14, 2015

Xxxholic: The Movie: A Midsummer Night's Dream is a tale as unusual as the characters themselves. Watanuki Kimihiro is a high school student cursed with the ability to see spirits. One strange day he is suddenly drawn into a very odd shop. The owner is Yuuko, known by many as the dimensional time space witch. For a price she will grant your wish. Yuuko has offered to grant Watanuki's desire to be free of the spirits. In exchange he must work for her at the shop. This is the heart of the anime Xxxholic.

Xxxholic: The Movie: A Midsummer Night's Dream takes place immediately after school lets out for Watanuki. While he 'slaves' away for Yuuko cleaning her collection of 'junk' a customer arrives with an unusual wish. She has returned home after a very long time only to find her key will not let her inside.

Soon after their meeting an invitation to the woman's mysterious home arrives. Ignoring Watanuki's complaints over the creepy situation Yuuko goes. Along with Watanuki she brings Domeki. He cannot see spirits but has the rare ability to be immune to their power.

Inside the mansion a group of collectors has been gathered. Underneath their flattering words lies a greedy darkness. The man in charge of the mansion plays on their hearts while ensnaring his prey within the mansion's maze of mysteries. Domeki and Watanuki find themselves trapped in a place where nightmares can become realities. But when Yuuko herself is captured can they hope to survive the mansion's evils and grant the woman's wish?

English Dub or English Sub?

Xxxholic has been beautifully dubbed. There are a great many animes whose dub makes one absolutely cringe. I find the best dubs to be ones where you would never think the film is a translation. Of course the dub voice does best if it fits the character. Yuuko's dub actress, Colleen Clinkenbeard, is one of my favorite examples. She brings to life the Yuuko I imagine from the manga. I recommend the English Dub highly.

Now for the English sub I highly recommend it as well. I like Xxxholic in either sub or dub. If I am multi-tasking I prefer the dub. When I can just lay there watching then I prefer the sub. I recommend if you like the movie one way then rewatch it the other. You may be surprised at which you prefer.

Loved the Xxxholic Film?

If you loved the film then I recommend watching season one of Xxxholic. I love this season so much one of my siblings purchased it for me. The wonderful part is it is easily available on Amazon making a snap to find. The storyline is filled with new insights in every episode. There is so much comedy to love from not only Yuuko and Watanuki but other characters the movie does not cover. And if you cannot get enough of season one then I want you to watch season two also known as season rei/kei. This is actually my favorite of all the seasons. Unfortunately it is also extremely difficult to find at an affordable price. Amazon doesn´t offer it nor does ebay. I keep looking though!

I am (graphic) stories? Xxxholic's anime style? Anime in general? Or are you comparing it to the manga?

Nice movie review, but for me I didn't like the digital (graphic) stories.
