Your Public Library - The Neighborhood Jewel

Updated on August 9, 2015

While passing by the library as a teenager, the thought "Why would you want to go in there?" popped up in my head. After all, we are classically conditioned that the library is the place you would go to if you needed to do a research paper. Now as a mature adult, the library has become a favorite hang out for me and my family.

The services the library offers is incredible. if you are a person on an entertainment budget, this is the place for you. What is the first place you think of when you want to rent a movie, Blockbuster or Netflix? Most libraries offer movies on both DVD and VHS. You can find both classics and recent releases in their collection. They are free to take out for a week (late charges will apply. Trust me, I found out the hard way).

Are you frustrated with many of today's CD's? Are you looking to preview it before deciding to buy it? Are you looking to try out music from a different genre? Why not check your local library. Once I found out that libraries have music CD's for borrowing, I was hooked. Let me give you an idea of the variety of music that I have gotten over the years. I've found a Nina Simone remix album, the Wiz soundtrack, Eric Clapton and B.B. King - "Riding with the King," multiple Tito Puente albums, Michael Jackson's 25th Anniversary Thriller album, Blind Boys of Alabama, and No Doubt just to name a few. If you are looking for a specific artist or CD, the library makes it easy for you. Most libraries have automated online systems. You can search the catalogue to see if and where the CD/DVD/book is being held. The Pinellas County Library System (where I live) is awesome. Not only can you request the item, but you can request them to send it to your nearest library for you to pick up.

Audiobooks, Video Games, MP3 CDs

Today's society offers newer technology. The library has stepped up to the plate to meet these demands. Paperbacks have and will continue to be the standard for storing and selling information. However, the increasing demand to accomodate IPODs, ZUNEs, etc. have led to the increase of audiobooks in different formats. Many of your favorite dramas, romance novels, and self-help books can be found on MP3 CD's.They can be uploaded onto you computer and then transferred to your MP3 player (takes up less space than other formatted files, ie. WMA). For the person who may not have an MP3 player, yet is looking for the digital format, PLAYAWAY players are ideal for you. They are very small compact players that allow you to listen to a pre-loaded audiobook. This technology is becoming more and more widespread. Finally, for the old-school generation, audio cd's are available for most books so you can play them in car while you drive.

If you would like to play a certain video game before making the decision to go and buy it, why not borrow the title from the library first? You can find a host of Playstation, XBOX, and Nintendo Wii games for your playing pleasure. There are titles for young kids as well as the more advanced popular third person games.

There are many families in today's society that cannot afford the internet in their home. Well, no problem. Most libraries have computers available for one hour increments. Your son or daughter can type up their research paper. You can check your email. Your fantasy sports stats can be searched on the internet.

Different Events Happening at a Local Library

The library holds many great events to entertain your toddler and school-aged child. My daughter has been able to enjoy events such as weekly storytime. Puppet shows are held there from time to time. A traveling production company even stopped through and put on a spectacular production. During Halloween, kids were invited to stop by trick-or-treating stations after storytime and other fun activities.

My wife is a poet and poetry is found in a library. So, what better place is there to meet and have poetry readings. This a can be a great place to network with other talented writers. Many times these reading are fused into the various cultural events that are held.

So when you have time, go to your local library see the wonderful things that they have to offer. These services are economical, and both educational and entertaining at the same time. I promise if you open your mind, you will lose yourself in there for hours.
