About You're All Surrounded
You're All Surrounded (YAAS) is a police, romance, youth 2014 Korean Drama. It reunites Lee Seung Gi and Cha Seung Won, Seung Gi cameo-ed on Cha Seung Won's rom-com Best Love as little Dokkojin. Both of them had CF together after Best Love wrapped up.
YAAS focuses on the growth of four rookie detectives namely Eun Dae Gu (Lee Seung Gi), Eo Soo Sun (Go Ara), Park Tae Il (Ahn Jae Hyun) and Ji Gook (Park Jung Min) who all work under team leader Seo Pan Seok (Cha Seung Won) and senior detective Lee Eung Do (Sung Ji Roo).
Their innocence and their determination to protect innocent citizens is the core message of this drama. The viewers will also understand how powerless policemen and detectives in that country who sometimes have to haggle powerful prosecutors who receive bribes from the criminals so they can be freed or not even being summoned for the crime they did.
7 Minutes Highlight Video
Seo Pan Seok who's known as a legendary detective initially refuses to "train" four rookie detectives. He complains that his team got not just one or two but four rookies. But there's a good reason behind this.
His supervisor Chief Kang Seok Sun (Seo Yi Sook) knows his wound & his past history, she's the person who initiated "rookies" to this station because of her hidden agenda. She has faith that Seo Pan Seok who also made lots of mistakes when he was just a rookie himself, will be able to make these four rookies into real detectives.
P4 is usually split into two teams: Eun Dae Gu with Eo Soo Sun (who's like oil and water) and Park Tae Il with Ji Gook (bromance overload). There're several instances when they work together as a team. Eun Dae Gu with his 150IQ is the problem solver, Eo Soo Sun is the energetic one who never gives up despite how ludicrous the tasks they have to solve (finding a gum wrapper in the rubbish bins, etc), Park Tae Il is the perfectionist one and Ji Gook who always gives the team a moment to smile.
As they solve many cases together, inevitably they grow closer. It's heartwarming to see how supportive they are to each other, they're there not only as wok mates but as a friend. Especially because they (except Soo Sun) live together. After they know each other's secret and wound, they're very protective so their friends are not hurting anymore.
Their loyalty and friendship is very heartwarming to see. Romance between Eun Dae Gun and Eo Soo Sun blossom beautifully, they take many baby steps in the beginning which causes frustration. But because of Eun Dae Gu's trauma & wound, this drama takes the right approach. It's quite unbelievable if he can open up his heart too easily although he knows Soo Sun since they were teenagers. At the end of the day, Soo Sun is there for Dae Gu and vice-versa. They're one of the most supportive amazing OTP in the Kdramaland.
Taeyeon - Love, That One Word FMV [EunEo Couple Sweet Moments]
Eun Dae Gu and Eo Soo Sun came from Masan, they already met each other when they were young. Soo Sun's heart fluttered when young Dae Gu (Kim Ji Yong) ties her shoelaces. But Ji Yong's heart belong to a Seoul noona.
When they meet again, working together in the same team, Soo Sun notices that Dae Gu is Ji Yong. But because of his painful memory of witnessing his mother was killed in front of him while he couldn't do anything to protect his mother and detectives' betrayal, Dae Gu closed his heart & feeling. He becomes a very cold man whose empathy lost when his mother cruelly was taken away from his life forever. He also changes his name with the help of Chief Kang.
After quite a while, without realizing Dae Gu ties Soo Sun's shoelaces when they're solving a given case. This strengthens Soo Sun's belief that Dae Gu is indeed Ji Yong.
She approaches him gently until the truth is finally out. She heals his wound and helps him to catch the culprit behind his mother's unjust death.
San E (Feat.Kang Min Hee) - What's Wrong With Me
You're All Surrounded ticked many right boxes for me. Acting is solid, chemistry between Lee Seung Gi and Go Ara is good & believable, chemistry between Cha Seung Won and Oh Yoon Ah is very sweet (too bad the writer didn't develop their relationship), cinematography is beautifully done. The writer did a great job in developing the main characters and Chief Kang, although I'd love to see Ji Gook's past.
Because I didn't expect YAAS to be a police drama, my expectation about the police plot was quite low. The weekly cases are not done well, and some actually don't make any sense. Although there're always lessons that P4 can learn from all these cases, but I wish those cases make the viewers care about the victims and the criminals. The writer also spent too much time in Yoo Moon Bae's family with a very absurd conclusion.
Pan Seok and his ex-wife Sa Kyung had a painful past which led to their divorce. Unfortunately, this sweet couple didn't get to spend much time together although they work in the same police station. Their reconciliation also falls flat although both actors have sizzling chemistry. Wish the writer spend more time developing their sweet romance.
Chief Kang surprises me over and over again with her conviction and her hidden agenda. She's the most developed character in YAAS. In the beginning, I thought she's the protagonist who'd do anything to fight for the innocent citizens. But, because of her position and her vision, she indirectly committed unforgivable crimes. She tries really hard to protect Dae Gu, it's very heartbreaking when he finds out the truth behind the kind woman who helped him when he was lost and didn't know anyone he could trust.
Toad Cha Tae Ho (Im Won Hee) is the scene stealer. He provides many spot-in comedic scenes. He's the upright detective who understands his work colleagues even though his method sometimes look quite ridiculous. He blames Powerful Team 3 for all the troubles they cause, but he's very supportive. He has his special "beans" which he believes can protect the team.
Goosebumps everytime the mysterious man who wears boots appear. Jo Hyung Chul (Song Young Kyu). I wish the writer could tie the loose ends about Hyung Chul because albeit all the crimes he did, he must've had reasons behind this.
This drama had very hectic live filming, the casts had very hard time when the scripts were out less than a week before the episode was aired. Lead actor, Lee Seung Gi got injured because of a prop knife when he was filming an action scene with Song Young Kyu. Song Young Kyu also got injured during one of fighting scene. Thankfully both of them are okay now.
Overall, I'd love to see more P4, Pan Seok and Kim Sa Kyung.
