An art book that happens to be funny
A coffee table book for the holidays. Not banal, not boring, but awfully close to pleasing just about everyone on your list.
Books of course don't need batteries, don't wear out and fit people of every size. If the person in your life has a television and is able to smile, then this might just do the trick, for less than $30. And they don't already have a copy.
All the familiar comic geniuses are here, plus some more obscure ones. Each portrait is special, handmade and has a twist. The cover image, for example, will take a second to process, but is guaranteed to not only generate a smile, but confirm the "Martin-like" humor you were hoping for.
In past years, I've had the Far Side books as my go to gift book, but this one is both more sophisticated and doesn't demand quite as much on the part of the viewer. It's art for humor's sake (and humor for art's sake).
Some of the people in the book:
Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams and Ricky Gervais.
I can't imagine how difficult it was not only find and get permission from these folks, but to script each shot and make it worth shooting (and then to pull it off). The Robin Williams shot alone seems daunting.
I'm told a portion of all the proceeds goes to Save The Children, and, as with all my reviews, buying from this page generates a donation to the Acumen Fund as well.
As mentioned, The Far Side Collection...
This book is huge and funny and a fabulous gift. Promise.
