This is a tough question to answer. However, I think that the Greatest Movie of All Time should be a timeless classic, one that can be watched over and over again.  Box office sales aren't the best criteria for that.  I don't have a Greatest Movie of All Time that I can think of, because there are many movies that can be considered the greatest.

I believe that the answer would vary greatly from one person to the next.. We all have our own criteria.  I enjoy a wide variety of movies, but common criteria would be: entertaining, inspiring, thought-provoking, being able to emotionally connect with one or more of the actors in the film, re-watch value, and more!

The greatest movie of all time...there can't be just ONE. But the best are those that have balanced content and form to blow us away, and give us that tingling sensation. They also have to be timeless.

The greatest movie of all time truly lies within the eyes and heart of the beholder.  Many a time, I have entered the movie theater expecting a mediocre show and have exited believing that I had just watched the next Oscar winner.  Movies move people in different ways and our range of emotions are affected, I believe, based on how we are feeling when we see the show.

I do believe that a movie that moves us and allows us to feel a diverse amount of emotion is one that stands out among others.  Movies that make people feel enraged, to empathetic to giddy with happiness typically score high among movie watchers.

Forest Gump is one movie that comes to mind.  Forest's character frustrates us at times, enlightens us at others and endears the audience.  Jenny's character angers us, we cry with her as we witness her pain and we experience a sense of mistrust and judgment when she returns to Forest.  We accept her though because she brings Forest happiness.  This movie spans decades of nostalgia and brings us to present day.  We realize in watching this movie that every decade, historal event and future aspiration mimic our lives  somehow.  This movie brought out every imaginable emotion in me as I watched it and at the end, as I cried; no, sobbed, I couldn't understand why I felt such sorrow.  After reflecting upon my reaction weeks after the viewing it occured to me that each scene unhatched a struggle or a sorrow in my life.  The happy events in the film allowed me to remember joys that are now gone.  This type of film in my opinion deserves to be placed in the greatest movie category.

Benjamin Button is another.  A man's life, in reverse and a similar nostalgia but realizing that instead of having things to look forward to, one had to live in the past.  This movie helped me realize how many of us do indeed live in the past because we are afraid of change and the unknown.

Box office sales may earn movies money but word of mouth gets viewers to the theater.  Movies full of blood and gore or filled with sex without meaning don't appeal to the general public.  A movie that brings teens and adults together and can bridge the gap between the generations is certainly a movie that can be considered worthy of recognition.
