The music you are referring to is geared toward a materialistic youth who are the #1 customers of the music industry! The young have yet to broaden their horizons and have begun to cling to old ideas in a vain attempt at self identification. That is the kind of music they listen to because that is where their mindset is.
However, as far as the answer to where has all the good music gone? Honestly, if you don't like country music, (I do not), then you have to go north to go old Canada where Rock and Roll is still the number one form of music and those sort of musicians actually have a chance of being produced and managed properly.
Or, like myself you would have to listen to underground music. There are several forms of underground music. Myself I listen to Slayer and a plethora of metal bands ranging from Fates warning to Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth and Soulfly. Though these bands are not exactly underground I challenge you to tell me where in the USA I can listen to this stuff on the radio when it is daylight!
Sadly, our country's youth are the biggest income source for the music industry and if there is limited exposure for other types of music than the socially accepted kind then the really unique and creative musicians in this country will continue to be forced to go to other countries to find success.
Rock and Roll has not died. Its been shipped overseas!
