I am a college student, and when I'm at school I don't have or use a TV. If I want to watch a specific show or movie I watch it online through Netflix, Hulu, or the individual channel websites. For the most part, this cuts down on the time I spend watching television.
When I'm home, this habit sticks with me. I don't surf the channels anymore looking for something to watch for no reason. I read, play guitar, and still get to enjoy movies or television programs when I want. I don't watch anything just because it's there or on, I only watch what I really want to follow.
So I guess my answer to this is that I don't know that I would ever disconnect the TV permanently (as in for the rest of my life), but I have no problem going long periods of time without it. If I thought my kids were watching too much television, I'd get rid of it, only allowing them to watch what they can get online, and set that to a time limit. For myself, I now have good television habits so I don't worry about it.
