This one is easy for me to answer.  Arlo Guthrie, hands down.  He comes from the legendary artist and activist, Woody Guthrie and Arlo has never compromised values for fame.  He has been a voice for the environment, spiritual freedom, charity, and human rights.  Family always came first and even though he has traveled all over the world, he has used his success to shine the spotlight on the talents of his children and their personal endeavors.  I could write a hub about it but, I already have.  :-)

I think his music and personal commitment to humanity says it far better than I can.

The kind of singer we should admire. Thanks for sharing about him, Linda!

I would have to say it's a tie between two totally different artists. That would be Elvis and Michael Jackson. They were both sensational performers.

If you check my age, you'll know its Elvis!  Not just those swiveling hips but his breakthrough music and of course his looks don't hurt either.  His background as a gospel singer helped to lend something different to his rock and roll music.

For me it was Elvis Presley from the age of five! He was the goodest out of the best. First saw him move in the film "Blue Hawaii."

King Creole, Jailhouse Rock, Lonesome Cowboy, Wooden Heart ... all these tracks say it all. There's still a lot more to say about him and his music.

During the latter years Mick Jagger and the Rolling stones came into the scene in a big way and still remain that way.

However Elvis was the first musician to make an impact on our entire family. smile

Love Elvis as well! Listened to his songs everyday when I was a kid., Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones rocked too!

My favourite male musician who influenced me the most has to be Jimi Hendrix. Great music, great clothes and I love the sixties feel. Such talent!

I know this is a weird one, but for me, it was Brahms. The first time I played one of his lullabies on the piano, I was so moved and intrigued that I started studying everything about him. I've played a lot of his piano pieces, and became a music major at university where I studied his orchestral pieces and his wider influence on music. For being such a dramatic, romantic composer, the innovations that he added to classical music are wonderfully subtle.

No, not weird. I love his lullabies too. Am a big Mozart and Beethoven fan as well! Classical musicians shaped music as it is today....and we've to give them the fullest credit for it!

Although Frank Zappa taught me to never shave with weasels, I think the male musician that has and continues to influence me the most is Van Morrison. Whether blues, Georgie Fame jazz- inspired riffs, nostalgic ballads, or uplifting spirituals- he strikes a chord with me. I could feed my DVD player w/ 6 discs and listen all day!

For me it would have to be Kurt Cobain. At the time his lyrics really resonated with me and helped me.

Those who know me or follow my work will know I'm going to name my brother, Steven Fromholz, Texas Poet Laureate, singer/songwriter and amazing human being. I don't make these statements because he's my brother (believe it or not)  but because he's one of the few who understood from the "get-go" that the secret to success in the music business was staying in the music business (his career spans 40+ years). He's not only one of the original "Outlaws" of Texas music but was honored by his home state of Texas by being named Texas Poet Laureate. He's a renaissance man of the first order being chosen by Paddler Magazine as  "One of the 10 Best River Guides In the U.S.", and after suffering a massive stroke (where most men would have just given up) has continued his career and writing and continues to improve even to this day. He's never said "why me" but always says "why not me?" He's kind, generous, loves God and country and works in circles supporting those who have suffered closed head injuries. His gentle nature and vivacious personality has been a huge influence my entire life -- and continues to be to this day. Every sister should have a brother like mine -- the fact that he's a famous musician/songwriter is just iceing on a wonderful cake.

Mile Davis. I am a bass player and the way he can convert any song into a masterpiece of jazz just moves the heck out of me. I am a huge fan of the work he did in the 80s.

Fun question! I'd say Johnny Cash. His songs got me through some rough teen years. There's just something so simply soulful about the man's voice, may he rest in peace.

That's a hard question, but I think I'd have to pick Bob Dylan. My mom listened to him, I've loved him all of my life, and my kids listen to him. From Freewheelin' to Tempest, he spans the generations.
