The one that quickly comes to my mind is "Saving Private Ryan" which lost to "Shakespeare in Love". I saw both and it wasn't close!

Saving Private Ryan should have won, I agree. I love how it told a very human story and brought the enormity of war down into a bite sized mission. It asked a lot of questions about the morality of war.
I don't know about which movie should have won, but when "A Beautiful Mind" won, I think it was a slap in the face not to give Russell Crowe best actor for it because he was outstanding.
Idiocracy. We didn't realize at that time that it was a documentary.
