When I was young I used to consider myself a Star Wars guy all the way. Star Wars had the more appealing adventure with fantasy elements and seemed better than having to watch what I then believed was boring dialogue driven science fiction in Star Trek.
As an adult however I rediscovered Star Trek and learned to love it, from the campy original series to the more tonally serious Next Generation.
So today I would consider myself a big fan of both series. I would say that Star Trek tends to have the better TV shows (Star Wars TV series are generally pretty lame) and Star Wars has the better movies (while I do like some of the Trek movies they never get to Star War's level).
One thing that helped was the realization that Star Trek isn't dull science fiction but has its own fantasy elements such as the different "races" of aliens being fitted closely to standard fantasy "races". For example Vulcans are like elves, logical and in harmony with nature while their brethren the Romulans serve the function of the more wild Wood Elves or perhaps even Dark Elves. The tribal and honor bound warlike Klingons behave like Orcs. Ferengi are like goblins, mischievous and concerned with money.
I could go on forever on the subject but I've rambled enough. I like both series equally.
