    OK, Grace, you asked for it smile
    "Put My Little Shoes Away" Woody Guthrie is one of THE saddest songs I've ever heard. My crazy mother, rest her soul, sang to me every night on the Murphy bed in our living room while giving me a sip from her bottle of Schlitz while we shared a plate of summer sausage and crackers between us in the bed.  (I had a very eccentric mom).
    I would cry at the song and my mom would say, "Do you want to hear it again, Honey?" I'd nod yes because I was too choked up to answer, but I did want to hear it again and again.  It made me the crazy person I am today. Here it is from my memory:  Be careful what you sing to your children smile
    "Come now mother bathe my forehead, for I'm growing very weak;
    Let one drop of water, Mother, fall upon my burning cheek
    Tell my ever-loving playmates that I never more shall play
    Give them all my toys, but Mother
    Put my little shoes away.

    Soon the baby will be larger and they'll fit his tiny feet
    Won't he look so handsome, Mother
    As he marches down the street?

    You will do this mother won't you?
    Put my little shoes away
    Give my toys to all my playmates
    But put my little shoes away.

    You're welcome - for my role in depressing the bunch of readers here.  At least I was able attach some meaning to this song and the  9/11 in a hub.

      You are going to be hard to beat. Thanks for sharing this experience. I can almost taste the combination of Schlitz, summer sausage, and tears.

      dashingscorpio, I must say, I have a new view of you smile Given our diverse views per our comments about relationships, I'm a bit floored by your choice of songs. Much less the pragmatist than I assumed smile

    Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton.  I think this song is especially sad because it was inspired by the death of Clapton's two year old child.
