   Has anyone learned how to play guitar without paying for lessons?

   My entire family was brought up to play by ear. No formal training but we all seem to stay in the pocket when it comes to timing, transitions and knowing were to fill without jumpin in or out to soon. My form sort of sucks compared to those who have had years of lessons but it still seems to get the job done.

   Yes, I have never taken any formal lessons.  But, I caution you that you must decide what you want to accomplish.  My desire was to be able to play major and minor chords to accompany my singing.  I have been able to go a bit beyond that point and can actually play some finger-picking formations that work off various chord formations.  Unless you have a natural ability you will not be able to pick up much regarding style and techiques. Lessons can be very boring and monotonous but sometimes that is what it really takes to get there.  If you are deadset on doing it yourself. First start by learning basic full chord formations.  Pick a key.  Try G, D, A.  Once you can make each with of those chords efficiently and strum the strings without killing any of them (deadening), then start practicing moving from one of the chords to the other.  Again, this takes practice, practice, practice because you had had to become familiar with the shape and be able to move into it quickly.  Once you can do that, then start working on the movement.  Four four time is four beats in each measure, possibly on the same chord but not always. 3/4 time or waltz timing is four counts (or pats of your foot) to the measure with the chord played on three of them and silent on the fourth.  When you have all that down. Start learning the neck of the guitar...what a string is key wise when played open, what does it become when you close it on the first fret, the second and so on until you get to the octave change. Do that with each string. Look at the relationship of the dots on the neck to the positions of these string sounds.  Once you are familiar with that area you will find there methods in which you an play shapes on the neck and gain the sound you want. For example, begin with an E chord, the bar it and slide one fret, figure out what it has become, then two frets, then three all the way down the neck to the Octave. That's a start! WB

   You can learn to play a guitar without paying for lessons if you can lay your hands on the right books. Apart from having these books you must own your own guitar and be ready to practice and practice and practice until your fingertips go from sour to numb.You can only become skillful though when you begin to play with others who're better than yourself. But first what kind of guitarist do you want to become? singer/guitarist or session guitarist? this will determine your focus as you learn.

The truth is, all you really have to do is surf around You Tube a bit to find free guitar lessons that are for beginners, advanced players, or anywhere in between. read more
