It's a good question and it's hard to say.
If you look at musics evolution, you can see, music changes along with society, but at the same time it doesn't change completely.
I think one of the main factors is generation. Now days we have artists like Lady Gaga, and of course what she has to say "registers" in the mind of her followers. I don't believe it's always a good thing though. I think many of societies problems are caused due to some of these artists. If various artists were to start singing about cheating, making money and being a pimp, their audience will start to think it's ok. A song is generally something you listen to over and over again, so this only reinforces the fact that what they are singing about which in some cases is not something good, gets programmed into the listeners mind.
Music is something that is out of this world. It can bring people together, I believe that. It can solve a lot of problems. But it's up to society to decide if they'll let the music break down the walls.
