5 Love Songs that Transcend Time

Updated on March 20, 2015

Creating the Mood with Romantic Love Songs

Picking that romantic song to fit that special person for that romantic occasion such as Valentine's Day, a first date, an anniversary, or just a romantic evening can create the desired mood between lovers.

How many of us have been listening to music and a song plays that carries us back in time to a memory with a special person? Or causes us to well up inside with emotion? Music is a magical, transcending vehicle that can transport us through time and space. It can help us remember the past and plan the future.

Elton John's "Your Song"

Nothing feels better than having a song dedicated to you by the one you love. Elton John's "Your Song" is heartfelt and romantic. It is a dedication of the depths of love to the lover. The strong bond the singer has for the lover can be felt in every word. "How wonderful life is that you're in the world..." The heart melts when told that your life has impacted another's to the extent that you complete their world. How could you miss the feelings of forever love coming to mind when listening to this song while thinking of the one you love?

The Orleans "Still the One" MP3 Download

The Orleans "Still the One"

Maybe you want to spice up your romantic evening with the person who has been in your life for so long that you cannot remember life before that person. You have lived through good times and bad times. You have loved and hated. You have laughed and cried. The Orleans cover the full spectrum of a long term relationship. Its fast beat is an indicator that a relationship should not be left to lose its flame for life. It should have spice and keep moving through time.

My husband and I stop to listen every time this song plays. We have been married for over 30 years now. He is "Still the One."

Rupert Holmes "Escape" (The Pina Colada Song)

What long term relationship doesn't get stale after a while? The story Rupert Holmes tells in "Escape" shows the extremes a couple might go to in order to feel that "lovin' feeling" again. It is pure romanticism. You have to suspend your willingness for disbelief when listening. Walking to find that your spouse or partner is the one who has answered a personal ad and having them see that you were the one who placed it might have explosive consequences. The song is much more fun and mature than that when both people have instant understanding of the other and find out new things that only confirm they are made for each other.

Ann Murray "Could I Have This Dance"

There is nothing like a dance to bring back memories. A first dance or a bride and groom's dance, both make the heart swell. Ann Murray captures the dance of a lifetime and a dance for life in her song, "Could I Have This Dance [for the rest of my life]." A song for a slow, melodious dance for lovers committing themselves to each other. It is an oldie but a goody. Many might remember Bud (John Travolta) and Sissy (Debra Winger) in Urban Cowboy dancing their first dance at their wedding to this song. I guess I just showed my age. Love it!

Jim Croce "Time in a Bottle"

Jim Croce's classic "Time in a Bottle" expresses eternal love. The beauty of the acoustic guitar with his soft tenor voice create a timeless romantic perspective of lasting love. Who knows what this great artist would have done if he had lived past his young years? This was an oldie for me when I was a teenager, but the words reached out to my romantic, girlish heart and still makes me smile. Wishing that we could keep certain times in a bottle is a universal love theme that will warm our heart with a flood of happy memories of the past.

Aerosmith "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing"

Love songs speak to the romantic heart all year long. Lasting relationships are coveted by many. In Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," the mix of Steven Tyler's voice with the band and a magnificent orchestra projects the feelings of being together for a lifetime. Not wanting to "miss a thing" by even closing our eyes to the love before us. Watching the movie Armageddon Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler (Steven Tyler's daughter), and Ben Affleck bring a deeper meaning of love. The romantic love is there, but the love a father and a daughter have can also be felt. It is simply lovely, no matter the context.
