Actions take place in the 1880s. Félicie, an orphan girl with a big dream of becoming a ballerina and her best friend, a young inventor, Victor run away from their orphanage in Brittany and go to Paris, their dream city. Here an 11-year-old girl finds the prestigious and competitive Opera Ballet School, which she could only dream of when being at the orphanage. Now, that she has nothing to lose, she takes a risk and pretends to be the child of a wealthy family, as only in such a way she can gain admittance to the well-known ballet school. With no formal dance experience, a young dancer learns that talent isn’t enough – she finds it hard to keep up with her fellow classmates. But with the help of her mentor – a mysterious cleaning woman with a limp, who turns out to be a former prima ballerina, Victor’s encouraging friendship and her determination, she turns her dreams into reality. Her hard work and passion beats even Camille Le Haut, a young Opera Ballet School star. She proves that everyone can reach for the dream, but only by following his own heart.

I dance because it’s always been a part of my life. It was there with my mom when I was a baby, and it’s here now… It allows me to live, to be myself.

Interesting facts about Leap! (Ballerina):

Did you know this?

Voice of a real dancer

The film stars the voice of Maddie Ziegler (Camille Le Haut, Félicie's arrogant opponent at the ballet school ), an American dancer, actress and model, who first became known for appearing in reality show Dance Moms from 2011 until 2016. She gained wider fame for starring in music videos by Sia, including a well-known ‘Chandelier’ music video. Also, you could see Ziegler as a judge on the 2016 season of So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation.

The choreography is modelled on real performances

Filmmakers decided to make realistic dance choreography in this film. The choreography is modelled on key frame animation (a drawing that defines the starting and ending points of any smooth transition) of Aurélie Dupont – former Paris Opera star, and fellow dancer Jérémie Bélingard. As a result, all the moves are faster and sometimes higher than it's humanly possible, but in general, the steps are real.

The world's best dance school

The film tells us not only about ballerina, the Paris Opera Ballet, the oldest national ballet company, also takes a great part in it. The prestigious Paris Opera Ballet is considered as the world’s best dance school. It has always been an integral part of the Paris Opera (was founded in 1669), though theatrical dance become an important component of the Paris Opera only in 1673.

Watch This Film With Your Family!

This French-Canadian animated film, that was co-directed by Eric Summer and Eric Warin, definitely is the one you should watch with the whole your family. It will be entertaining for everyone, especially for those, who have ever experienced ballet classes and knows what it takes to reach a goal. Graphics is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful I have ever seen in animated films, mainly because here you will see a lot of scenes with city sceneries. You can even guess in what epoch the actions take place as we see a half-built Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty and other sceneries including beautiful Paris streets.

Passion is more important than technique. How you deliver it, musicality, emotion. Every sound, every harmony needs to leave your body vibrating from the ends of your hair to the tips of your toes.

Sia - Suitcase in Leap! (2017)

Suitcase by Sia (lyrics)

[Snippet]

[Verse]
Have you told me all?
I've got things to say
Hey, I'm talking to ya
We got things to do
We got plans to make
And I wanna take you with me
Yeah, I wanna take you with me

[Pre-Chorus]
But a far-off gaze is wide in me
Can you feel it?
And if you can't tell I'm a restless girl
What are you hearing?

[Chorus]
Pack it all away, pack it all in one suitcase
I got all I need, all I need to be free
Pack it all away, pack it all in one suitcase
I got all I need, all I need to be free
Pack it all away, pack it all in one suitcase
I got all I need, all I need, I'm flying
Pack it all away, pack it all in one suitcase
I got all I need, all I need to be free
Pack it all away, pack it all in one suitcase
I got all I need, all I need, I'm flying

Chantal Kreviazuk - Be Somebody (from Ballerina soundtrack)

Be Somebody by Chantal Kreviazuk (lyrics)

You're gonna be somebody
You'll be bigger than Mars
They might walk on you now
But they'll walk on your star
You're gonna take the title like the champion you are
From Ibiza to L.A., London to Qatar
You'll be somebody
You'll be somebody
You'll be somebody
You'll be somebody

You're gonna be somebody
You'll be bigger than Mars
They might walk on you now
But they'll walk on your star
You're gonna take the title like the champion you are
From Ibiza to L.A., London to Qatar
You'll be somebody

You're gonna take the title like the champion you are
From Ibiza to L.A., London to Qatar
You'll be somebody (Oh)
You'll be somebody (Oh)
You'll be somebody (Yeah)
Be somebody (Oh)
