#10 in My 10 Best Comedy Movies List - Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
#10 in My 10 Best Comedy Movies List - Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

#10 in My 10 Best Comedy Movies List

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)

In this movie Jim Carrey stars as the so-called Pet Detective, Ace Ventura whose sole mission is to find lost or stolen pets and reunite them with their owners.

And in this movie, Ace Ventura has been called in to track down the Miami Dolphins' missing mascot, Snowflake the bottlenose dolphin. It is up to Ace to find Snowflake before the Super Bowl. And so the adventure begins, taking Ace on a madcap chase with a load of mishaps on the way!

This is the movie that made Carrey famous, and though he has made many great movies since, I think this is still one of his best. It is full of his signature goofy, screwball antics, and with a unique face that can contort into all manner of weird expressions, like no other! It is this that makes this film one of my top 10 comedy movies of all time.

10. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is in my 10 best comedy movies because of this great comic actor, plus loads of animals, a mystery adventure and plenty of gags this is a great family comedy film.

If you like Jim Carrey, I'd also like to recommend a few more top comedies starring Carrey in similar slapstick style films: Dumb and Dumber, When Nature Calls (sequel to Pet Detective), How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events. All great films that showcase his inimitable comic style!

#9 in My Best Comedies of All Time List - Young Frankenstein
#9 in My Best Comedies of All Time List - Young Frankenstein

#9 in My Best Comedies of All Time List

Young Frankenstein (1974)

Starring Gene Wilder and directed by Mel Brooks, is a great movie spoof of the classic horror films, especially parodying Boris Karloff in such classic 1930s horror films as Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein.

Gene Wilder stars as Frederick Frankenstein, "a rather brilliant surgeon" who goes to Transylvania to resume his ancestor's gruesome re-animation experiments.

Assisted by the hunchback Igor he succeeds in creating his monster, and so begins an outrageous revamp of the classic Frankenstein story!

Mel Brooks recreated the Frankenstein laboratory of the original Frankenstein film, with such attention to detail and a brilliant cast, this horror spoof has become a classic in itself with non-stop comedy. With an endless of gags and the wacky appeal of Gene Wilder, this is definitely one of his best comedies of all time.

9. Young Frankenstein

This is a laugh-out-loud horror spoof, loaded with gags, a zany cast of weird characters and one of the most ridiculously funny movies ever!

For more top comedies - you might also like:

* For more top comedies starring Gene Wilder, might like to check out: Stir Crazy and See No Evil, Hear No Evil - both of which also features the late great Richard Pryor.

* For another very funny horror spoof, try Carry on Screaming - which is also my top comedy films choice of the Carry On films and starring the talented Kenneth Williams.

* And for more good comedy movies from the great Mel Brooks, I really like High Anxiety - his homage to Alfred Hitchcock and Blazing Saddles - an outrageous Western spoof!

There were some great comedy films out in cinemas last year. And this is my top 10 comedy movies 10. Please feel free to vote on your faves and leave a comment if you'd like to add any other cool 2010 comedy films that you enjoyed and would like recommend!

My Top 10 Best Comedy Movies - Number 8

Team America: World Police (2004)

From the creators of South Park, this is kind of like their version of Thunderbirds, but an over the top, non-PC, highly offensive, silly, ironic and outrageous version!

Team America is a self-appointed group, dedicated to their mission of bringing global stability in a world of dictators and terrorists! Yeah sure, they manage to foil a number of terrorist attempts around the world, though arguably causing more damage themselves at the same time! Sound familiar?

As well as the story and dialog, the visual detail of this very funny film is also pure genius. The puppets themselves are very basic looking but with highly detailed faces, that makes them move and look goofy.

What makes this such a good comedy movies and well recommended is the excellent combo of silly visual comedy of the jerky movements of the puppets and the very funny, clever mocking plot and dialog. With plenty of classic moments and quotes that you'll find yourself repeating well after watching it!

8. Team America: World Police

If you are of a sensitive nature, easily offended or just not the cynical type, then you may not enjoy this, but for me this is one of the top funny movies of the decade!

For more of the same quality top funny movies from Trey Parker - creator of South Park, I'd recommend checking out the South Park movie.

Number 7 in My Top Comedies - A Shot in the Dark 1964
Number 7 in My Top Comedies - A Shot in the Dark 1964

Number 7 in My Top Comedies - Movie List

A Shot in the Dark (1964)

This is the second film in the very funny Pink Panther movie series. With the brilliant Peter Sellers starring as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau, this film has laughs from beginning to the end. This is one of the top comedies of all time that manages to seamlessly combine the sophisticated and the slapstick!

In this sequel, Clouseau has managed, (through no fault of his own!) to be assigned to a high-profile murder case. Unfortunately, he becomes infatuated with the prime suspect, which as you can imagine complicates the investigation. But as the body count keeps going up, if Clouseau doesn't solve the case soon, his career will be finished!

With a brilliant supporting cast including Herbert Lom, Clouseau's long suffering superior officer and Burt Kwouk as his manservant. This is one of best comedies of all time because it showcases Peter Sellers' comic genius to full effect.

If you have only watched recent remakes of the Pink Panther films then I'd have to say that they are nothing like the originals - but a grave injustice to comedy fans everywhere! Peter Sellers makes this film (and others in the Pink Panther series) truly a great joy to watch.

A Shot in the Dark (1964) Trailer

7. A Shot in the Dark

A Shot in the Dark is a brilliant blend of slapstick, spot-on comic timing, a witty script, an excellent supporting cast, and Peter Sellers at his very best.

If you liked this great comedy movie, you might also like other Peter Sellers movies like Dr. Strangelove, I'm All Right Jack and The Ladykillers (the original).

My 10 Best Comedy Movies List #6 - Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

My 10 Best Comedy Movies List #6

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)

A raucous spoof of 1960s spy films such as the Bond films, this movie stars Mike Myers as the self styled man of mystery and secret agent Austin Powers, who has been brought back to defeat his arch enemy Dr Evil!

Another non-stop hilarious adventure film in my list, this one has Austin Powers as a hip London fashion photographer and secret agent from the sixties. Having been frozen back in the 60s he has now been thawed out and brought back to life in the nineties, in order to save the world from his old foe Dr Evil, who is up to his old tricks again and going all out for global domination.

With both of these characters played by Mike Myers, this film just shows off his great comic talents. And the groovy character of Austin Powers in particular is hilarious as he tries to cope with the modern world of the 1990s with his free love and other such 60s tendencies!

6. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

With a great cast, ongoing jokes and outrageous behaviour, this is a great comedy adventure. I also enjoyed sequels to this very funny movie.

My Top Comedy Films List #5 - This is Spinal Tap
My Top Comedy Films List #5 - This is Spinal Tap

My Top Comedy Films List #5

This is Spinal Tap (1984)

This is a mock rockumentary, that is to say a very funny movie that ridicules heavy metal rock bands on tour with this imitation rock band, Spinal Tap. Ironically, after this film became such a big hit when it was released, Spinal Tap did in fact go on tour in a weird self-fulfilling prophecy!

This rock documentary includes interviews with the band members, backstage bickering, the trials of the band manager as he tries to keep the band on track and the ongoing problems of keeping their drummer(s). Also included in this fly-on-the-wall film is how the band comes up with their lyrics and ideas for their stage sets, the problems of bringing girlfriends on tour and how to make your guitars sound louder be having amps that go up to 11?

I love the way this film mocks the pretentious and ridiculous, from their bad English accents and dodgy hair styles. To the way the band members are just so oblivious to how silly they are!

5. This is Spinal Tap

Movies like This is Spinal Tap that I'd also recommend is Best in Show which does the same mock documentary style work-over on dog shows. And also For Your Consideration - a send up of the movie awards industry.

My 10 Best Comedy Movies List #4 - Airplane!
My 10 Best Comedy Movies List #4 - Airplane!

My 10 Best Comedy Movies List #4

Airplane! (1980)

I've have included quite a few parody films in this top 10 funny films ever list, but what better way to have a laugh than at the films that think they are better than they are!

And Airplane is another spoof movie, this time one that sends up the already over the top disaster movies of the 70s, Airplane! is the original parody film. Everyone is fair game for ridicule in this hilarious airplane calamity!

Some of the gags maybe a bit low brow and obvious, but if like me you love slapstick and silly humor, you'll love this one too. The jokes are non-stop in this disaster movie that has a host of stars including Leslie Nielsen and Lloyd Bridges. All of who manage to combine pure silliness, over acting, topical gags and a load of clichés to great effect.

4. Airplane!

This is a classic parody disaster movie that has influenced many of the best comedies since. Other very funny films that I have enjoyed, that have the same sort of style and humor of Airplane that I've enjoyed includes Naked Gun series also starring Leslie Nielsen and Hot Shots films.

Number 3 in My Best Comedy Films List
Number 3 in My Best Comedy Films List

Number 3 in My Best Comedy Films List

Hot Fuzz (2007)

Number 3 in this 10 best comedy films list is Hot Fuzz! With Simon Pegg and Nick Frost leading a talented cast that include many of our current top British comedians, this is a non-stop action comedy adventure, with non-stop action AND comedy throughout. I'd describe it as a buddy cop movie (think Bad Boys) set in an old sleepy English village (think Christie's Miss Marple) - you can see how this set-up is primed for comedy!

I've loved the work of Pegg and Frost in TV series Spaced and ZomCom brilliant film Shaun of the Dead, and they've honed and applied their comedy craft to Hot Fuzz with excellent results. Like I said this is a buddy cop movie, in an homage to films like Bad Boys and Point Break with comedy references to a whole host of other movies as well.

This film is an all out action movie that is grounded in the (fictional) West Country village of Sandford. A village where crime is practically non-existent, even with the simple (cake-eating) police force, but there does seem to be plenty of tragic and obscure 'accidents' though this doesn't seem to concern the residents too much. Until Pegg's character, Sgt. Angel, having been 'promoted' from the London Met to join the ranks of the Sandford police force, becomes suspicious of the dark under-currents of this quite village and it's eccentric residents.

3. Hot Fuzz - and More Cool Simon Pegg Comedies

This is a slick, very cool comedy film of the highest quality. For more comedy from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and co-writer Edgar Wright, check out the TV show Spaced (2 series) and Shaun of the Dead.

My Best Funny Movies List #2 - Monty Python's Life of Brian
My Best Funny Movies List #2 - Monty Python's Life of Brian

My Best Funny Movies List #2

Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)

Life of Brian is a satire that ridicules the ways in which people can become obsessive and mindless followers of someone or something, just because everyone else is doing it! In this case, that someone is a man named Brian who struggles to cope with his adoring fans and their sheep-like mentality.

With the Monty Python cast playing multiple roles plus a load of cameos including Spike Milligan and George Harrison. This is the story of Brian, and starts from his birth on the 25th of December in a stable in Bethlehem, quite near to the birthplace of another soon-to-be-famous person. He in fact seems to encounters various cases of the same mistaken identity throughout his life to the very end!

2. Monty Python's Life of Brian

For me Life of Brian is the best of Monty Python because it not only shows off their comedy talent at their sharpest and smartest but is a very clever satirical look at life. It is still applicable today, not just in terms of religion but any aspect of life where you will find fans and followers who just take it too far!

For some more comedy of a similar style and taste, you might also like to check out other Python films, especially Holy Grail, their TV series Monty Python's Flying Circus and also other Terry Gilliam films such as Brazil.

My 10 Best Comedy Movies List #1 - Withnail & I
My 10 Best Comedy Movies List #1 - Withnail & I

#1 in My 10 Best Comedy Movies List

Withnail & I (1987) is #1 in My 10 Best Comedy Movies List!

This is an end of an era bizarre semi-autobiographical comedy by writer-director Bruce Robinson. Set in 1969, it opens in Camden, North London with the 2 main characters of the title, flat-mates and out-of-work actors played by Richard E. Grant (Withnail) and Paul McGann (I).

This is a bleak and caustic story of two destitute young actors who struggle in their squalid London flat, at the end of the 1960s to cope with life and all the complexities that goes with it!

Brilliantly acted, especially by Grant as the manic, permanently drunk and demented Withnail and the anxiety ridden McGann. Their attempt to escape their problems by getting out of the city and heading for the country for a week, is a manic disaster! Having to deal with inhospitable locals, endless rain, a sinister poacher and no distractions means that they end up spending more time with each other cooped up in a cramped cottage. This just makes their predicament worse - and even more hysterical, paranoid and ridiculous!

What do you think of my best comedy movies list? Don't forget you can vote on them in the poll above. And also add your best comedy movies of 2010 - 2011 and of all time.

What do you think of my top 10 comedy films list?

You've got some dandies in here, for sure. That's a mighty tall order coming up with only ten. If we're talking pure bellylaughs, I think I'd want to include all the Peter Sellers/Clouseau movies. Then there's "Dr. Strangelove" and "The Mouse That Roared." In my opinion, Sellers may have been the funniest man ever to appear on film.

You left off the greatest comedy movie (actually the best movie period ever)...The Blues Brothers (the original, not the lame 2000 sequel). It's a classic. Oh well, it's your list :)
