Best Movies for 10 Year Olds
How to choose a good movie for a 10 year old?
Whether you're a parent looking for a suitable movie that your 10 year old can watch with the family or you're 10 and want to choose the best movie for a slumber party, it can be hard to find a suitable film among the wide range of choice available today.
For parents the challenge is to choose something suitable for your child but something they will want to watch. Being a parent myself I am very cautious about choosing movies for my children that are too scary, violent, "romantic" or explicit in other ways. Even movies rated "PG" can have several scenes that cause concern. Likewise a 10 year old will want to choose something that their parents will approve of.
So read on for some tips to finding the best movie as well as lots of suggestions of specific movies for this age range.

Tips on Finding the Perfect Movie
Whatever your criteria on what is suitable for a 10 year old, here are some tips for finding the right movie for you.
There are lots of websites that give good reviews of movies for kids. As well as checking out standard reviews on websites such as IMBD and amazon there are lots of websites that give good reviews of whether movies are suitable for kids.
My favorite movie review site is Kids Pick Flicks There are a team of professional movie reviewers who are kids themselves. Each movie also has a review by Tara The Mom who is a parent reviewer.
Another website for parents is Common Sense Media. I often check this out when choosing a movie for my kids. It gives each movie an age rating you can instantly see if it will be suitable. It gives parents a quick hightlight of anything they need to be aware of that's in the movie, it describes the story and lets you know if it'a any good. There is also a section which gives suggestions of discussion points for parents and children if you want the experience to be educational.
Ask friends/ parents
If your 10 years old it's worthwhile asking friends, relatives (and even parents) of suggestions of movies they've watched to give you some ideas. Parents can ask other parents for ideas of suitable films too.
Many movies have previews available on youtube or other sites for to check out before watching it.
There are some great classic movies that parents of 10 year olds will remember enjoying from their own childhood and will enjoy watching them as a family film once again. There are a selection of movies that I loved and remembered from my own childhood featured below.
Other classics that come to mind include the Karate Kid, Neverending Story, Mary Poppins and Big.
One of the movies that is special to me is The Goonies. This was the first movie I ever saw at the cinema when I was about 8. Even now I still love watching about the group of kids who fine a treasure map which takes them on a roller coaster ride of an adventure.
Marty McFly is blasted to 1955 in the time machine created by Doc Brown and finds himself in a time-shattering situation that jeopardizes his future.

Best Movies for 10 Year Old Girls
These movies are particularly good for girls. They include princess movies, such as Another Cinderella Story (with happy ever afters and handsome heroes) and films based on books that girls love (Ramona and Beezus).
Most of these are good for a sleepover with other girls as most parents wouldn't object to movies such as Tangled and The Princess Diaries. Check out more ideas for best sleepover movies.
Of course not all 10 year old girls will like these kinds of movies. Some of the best movies for girls include a strong female kind of character (like Brave mentioned below). Some movies with tomboy / strong female characters include Jo March in Little Women (1994 movie with Winona Ryder), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly) in Pirates of the Caribbean and Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell in Hook. A couple that are rated PG -13 are Kiera Knightly in Bend it Like Beckham (a good film portraying women playing soccer) and Fried Green Tomatoes.
Ramona is a little girl with a very big imagination and a nose for mischief. Her playful antics keep everyone in her loving family on their toes, including her older sister Beezus, who's just trying to survive her first year of high school. Through all the ups and downs of childhood, Ramona and Beezus learn that anything's possible when you believe in yourself and rely on each other.
Set around the modern world of the music biz, the classic fairy tale isrecast with Mary Santiago, as the princess-to-be, working for a cruelpop star and her two horrible daughters.
A great family movie for families with preteens. Anne Hathaway plays Mia, a clumsy adolescent teenager who discovers that her paternal grandmother (Julie Andrews) is Queen of a small country and she is therefore a princess. She stays with her grandmother for two weeks of "training" and then it is up to Mia whether she stays in this role and life or not.
A funny modern fairy tale.
