Best Romantic Christmas Movies

Updated on April 14, 2015

The Top Romantic Movies to Watch this Christmas

Are you looking for a romantic movie to snuggle up with this Christmas?

I love Christmas movies and as Christmas 2014 is just around the corner I've compiled a list of romantic movie favorites to watch. So, if you're looking for a great loved up Christmas film this article has lots of suggestions.

The list is quite personal and includes many of my own favorite romantic comedies including Love Actually and Bridget Jones Diary. Having said this, I have also researched Christmas movies from quite a few websites and looked at lots of different people's list as their top films. They include lists on the Internet Movie Database and Yahoo Voices.

I have also tried to find Christmas movies that perhaps other people haven't seen before and are not included on other lists. There are more modern Christmas movies and traditional classics too.

Also there are a couple of new movies due for release in Christmas 2014.

Check out a summary of the best romance flicks below.

My Favorite Christmas Romantic Comedy

Love Actually (Widescreen Edition)
Love Actually (Widescreen Edition)

I love this film because it's funny with romance thrown in and because it makes you feel good after you've watched it.

I'm not the only one that loves it. It has a rating of 7.7 on the Internet Movie database which is a high score for a romantic comedy. It was also nominated for 2 Golden Globes.

It features a star studded cast including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth and Emma Thompson

It follows the love lives of 8 very different couples in hectic month just before Christmas in London. The movie tells the story of the couples who are falling in love and out of love, some are with right people, some are with the wrong people, some are looking to have an affair and some are in the period of mourning.

Are You a Love Actually Fan?

It's now over 10 years since Love Actually was first released. That is making me feel quite old!

Christmas Romantic Comedies

Personally, I love romantic comedies at Christmas, they are always uplifting which is perfect as I want to feel great at this time of year.

Here are some more of my favorite great romantic comedies which have lots of Christmas scenes in to choose from.

Bridget Jones's Diary
Bridget Jones's Diary

Not many Christmas themed movies have Oscar nominations but Renee Zellweger was nominated for best actress in this movie for her role of Bridget Jones and the movie was also nominated for a Golden Globe as best motion picture.

This is a very funny movie. I think it works best for girly nights in with friends as we have all had time when we have felt like Bridget Jones (or is that just me?).

The story is as follows:

Bridget is a single London based publicist who divides her free time between binge eating in front of the TV, downing Chardonnay with her friends, and updating the diary in which she records her negligible weight fluctuations and romantic misadventures of the year. Things start off badly at Christmas when her mother tries to set her up with seemingly standoffish lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), whom Bridget accidentally overhears dissing her. Instead she embarks on a disastrous liaison with her raffish boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). Eventually, Bridget comes to wonder if she's let her pride prejudice her against the surprisingly attractive Mr. Darcy.

While You Were Sleeping
While You Were Sleeping

I'm not the only one who loves this movie. Practically every romantic Christmas movie list I have looked at features this movie. And it has a five star rating on amazon.

It's another upbeat, funny romance and I love Sandra Bullock in this role.

Lucy, a lonely subway worker, becomes smitten with a handsome stranger. But she saves his life after he's been mugged on during her shift on Christmas Day. He falls into a coma and at the hospital his hilariously offbeat family mistakes her for his fiancee! Soon, the mix-ups escalate as Lucy fabricates a life between herself and a man she's never met! And when Lucy falls for his charming brother the situation really gets uproarious as she's forced to make a choice between the two!

The Family Man
The Family Man

Nicolas Cage is one of my favorite actors and I love pretty much anything that he's in so this choice may be a bit biased.

Having said this, I don't think I'm alone as Nicolas Cage won the favorite actor award for a comedy/romance at the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards in 2001.

The movie tells the story of high-powered wall street of bachelor Jack Campbell who gets the shock of a lifetime when he wakes up one morning in suburban new jersey next to Kate the girlfriend he left 13 years ago. Suddenly Jacks entire world is turned upside down.

Did You Know?

Renee Zellweger gained 25 pounds for her role in Bridget Jones, and then actually worked at a British publishing company for a month in preparation for the role where nobody recognized her. She kept a photo of her then boyfriend Jim Carey on the desk but even though her co-workers thought it strange they were too polite to mention it.

The Holiday

I had to include this movie as I really like watching the handsome Jude Law!

The Holiday
The Holiday

Another romantic comedy starring Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Cameron Diaz and Jack Black

Iris lives in England and is in love with a man who is about to marry another woman. In L.A. Amanda finds out the man she lives with has been unfaithful. The women have never met but meet online at a home exchange website and impulsively trade homes for the holiday season. Iris moves into Amanda's L.A. house in sunny California and Amanda arrives in snow covered England. Shortly after arriving at their destinations, both women find a new romance. Amanda is charmed by Iris' handsome brother Graham and Iris meets film composer Miles

In the war in Afghanistan, Captain Cody Cullen is touched by lovely card sent by Faith Spelman from the small town of Nevada City, California. As months pass, the card never leaves his side, giving him the strength to survive and setting him on a mission to find her.

A touching Christmas film.

A Christmas Kiss

Another more recent romantic comedy. If you like romantic comedies you'll enjoy this one too.

It's great for teens through to adults and is another top chick flick.

This movie has a five star rating over on amazon and is a great popcorn movie to play over the Christmas period.

A Christmas Kiss

I really do like The Holiday. My favorite modern Christmas movie. Best performance has to however be given to Hans Zimmer. Absolutely fantastic score.

Great finds. Family stone is one of my favorite movies of all time. I find that around this time of year I get lost on the romantic holiday movies on Lifetime.

Valuable topic. I would add "White Chrismas" to this list, a ll time classic in Christmas, yes, love story. But more, tragedy and sacrifices of a generation now passing, the story of World War II after VJ Day. Thanks.
