The 10 Best Avett Brothers Songs

Updated on April 6, 2011

The Avett Brothers

The Avett Brothers are a folk/bluegrass band from Concord, North Carolina, consisting of extremely talented brothers Scott and Seth Avett, and stand-up bassist Bob Crawford. Their music is passionate enough to give you goosebumps, touching enough to make you cry, and infectious enough to bring you out of any funk that you may be in.

If you haven't heard of The Avett Brothers, then you are in for a treat, and quite frankly, will probably have a new favorite band, or at the very least...a new appreciation for folk & bluegrass music.

I have compiled a list of what I think are the 10 best songs by The Avett Brothers. This was not an easy task, as I love pretty much every song they've ever done. They have such an arsenal of beautiful music, that I'm sure many people will completely disagree with my top 10 list, and that exemplifies the beauty and diversity of this band and its fanbase.

#10 Me and God

Album: A Carolina Jubilee

What makes the song great: It reveals the band's convictions, along with their view on organized religion.

Best lyric:

Now I don't doubt that The Good Book is true,

But what's right for me may not be right for you.

#9 Kick Drum Heart

Album: I And Love And You

What makes the song great: It showcases the band's songwriting ability & has incredible dynamics.

Best lyric:

I won't look back anymore;

I left the people that do.

It's not the chase that I love,

It's me following you.

#8 Swept Away

Album: Mignonette

What makes the song great: Passionate lyrics & fantastic vocal harmonizing.

Best lyric:

Well, life is ever changing,

but I will always find a constant

and comfort in your love.

#7 When I Drink

Album: The Gleam

What makes the song great: It takes an honest look at life's problems, giving listeners something to relate to.

Best lyric:

But when I drink,

I spend the next morning in a haze.

But we only get so many days;

Now I have one less.

#6 Will You Return?

Album: Emotionalism

What makes the song great: It is, quite possibly, the catchiest song by The Avett Brothers.

Best lyric:

I wish you’d see yourself as beautiful as I see you.

Why can’t you see yourself as beautiful as I see you?

#5 St. Joseph's

Album: The Second Gleam

What makes the song great: It is full of captivating melodies, and, of course, great lyrics.

Best lyric:

We sat at Lake Junaluska,

And cried over where we would wed.

If it’s this place or any other,

It’s not where I am…it’s who I’m with.

#4 Head Full of Doubt/ Road Full Of Promise

Album: I And Love And You

What makes the song great: It is the most inspirational and uplfting song by the band.

Best lyric:

If you're loved by someone, you're never rejected;

Decide what to be and go be it.

#3 Murder In The City

Album: The Second Gleam

What makes the song great: It has a strong focus on morals and family values.

Best lyric:

Make sure my sister knows I love her.

Make sure my mother knows the same.

Always remember there was nothing worth sharing

Like the love that let us share our name.

#2 November Blue

Album: Country Was

What makes the song great: A killer piano riff, beautiful melody, and a down-south country feel.

Best lyric:

Oh lady, tell me I'm not leaving, you're everything I dreamed.

I'm killing myself thinking, I've fallen like the leaves.

#1 I And Love And You

Album: I And Love And You

What makes the song great: It takes every good quality about The Avett Brothers, and rolls it into one beautiful masterpiece. If this song doesn't give you occasional chills, then you are probably a Black Eyed Peas fan.

Best lyric:

When at first I learned to speak,

I used all my words to fight

With him and her and you and me;

Ahh, but it's just a waste of time.
