Byakugan contacts

Updated on December 14, 2012

The Byakugan ( "White Eye", "All Seeing White Eye") is a cool bloodline ability of the Hyuga clan, in the Naruto-universe (manga/anime). Alongside the Sharingan and the Rinnegan, it's one of the so-called Three Great Eye Techniques. Of those three, the Byakugan has been said to achieve the greatest vision and insights; even though more powerful techniques are associated with the Sharingan and Rinnegan.

The Byakugan has the appearance of featureless, white-coloured eyes. When it is activated, the pupils become more distinct.

The lack of a black pupil in the center of the eye, means this look is harder to replicate with contact lenses, compared to the Sharingan for example. Nevertheless, there are some contact lenses available that do a nice job of mimicing the Byakugan style. Getting a pair of these contact lenses is essential for Byakugan (or Hyuga) cosplay.

Byakugan contact lenses - Where to get 'em?

Byakugan contact lenses are not very easy to locate. Especially since the lenses that are usually labelled as "Byakugan contact lenses", don't look that good in my opinion.

One thing to watch out for is that some of the best looking Byakugan lenses actually impede your vision, because they block your iris completely. Great to take a couple pictures, but they're not a good idea if you want to walk around :)

Below I've listed the best sources I've been able to find online. They ship worldwide and have good prices.

Byakugan make-up - Not just for girls ;)

Achieving the perfect Byakugan look requires a bit more than just contact lenses, because of the distinctive look of the veins on the side of the head! Some make-up is definitely required to finish of the look. We went through the trouble of finding out what kind of make up you should use to blend in with the rest of the skin. The consensus seems to be that either scar wax or liquid latex seem work best for this. They may be sculpted/painted on in the pattern you want and then blended in with makeup. Liquid latex even naturally crinkles to look like veins, if done right.

If you're interested in seeing examples or tutorials for the Byakugan make-up, it suffices to take a look around on Youtube. Plenty of users have documented their efforts there, like in this video:

Byakugan background and abilities

In contrast to the Sharingan and the Rinnegan, which only some clan members possess or can unlock, all members of the Hyuga clan have the Byakugan from birth and can make use of it.

The primary ability of the Byakugan provides the user with a near 360º field of vision (except from a blind spot at the back of the neck).

It's second ability is having some degree of telescopic vision and being able to see through solid materials (including almost all barriers and things such as smokescreens).

The third ability of the Byakugan, and one of it's most significant uses, is the capacity to see chakra, chakra flow and the chakra circulation system within the body with superb detail. The Hyuga Clan's greatest assault technique, Gentle Fist, is built upon this. The Gentle Fist style concentrates on causing internal traumas by striking opponents along the chakra pathway system. Especially gifted Byakugan users (such as Neji) can take the Gentle Fist style even further, by attacking the "tenketsu". By striking these chakra points, the Byakugan user gains complete control over their adversary's chakra system.

Extended use of the Byakugan leads to serious eye strain. This however, isn't permanent.

AO's Byakugan

The only known wielder of the Byakugan that is not a member of the Hyuga clan is Ao, a member of the Kirigakure ANBU Corps. At some point, Ao procured a Byakugan from a conquered member of the Hyuga clan and transplanted into his right eye socket. His skill with his Byakugan is significant and he protects it at all costs.
