Captain Philips on DVD
This is more than just another good Tom Hanks movie - Captain Philips is a great Tom Hanks movie.
Directed by Paul Greengrass, Captain Philips tells the remarkable true life story of a cargo ships captain whose ship and crew were faced with capture by Somali pirates as they traveled around the African Horn.
For me, the stars of this movie are: Tom Hanks - playing Captain Philips and Barkhad Abdi who takes the part of Muse
After directing his crew in an attempt to keep the pirates at arms length, they eventually succumb to the pressure and the pirates board the cargo ship. Captain Philips then attempts to protect his crew and calm his captors from a fate that all crew travelling through this region of Africa must fear.
I am not going to give away too much of the plot line or the conclusion as you will surely want to experience this for yourself. The film itself is lengthy at 2 hours and 14 minutes. However, it doesn't feel long as the story moves at pace and with suspense at every turn. No special effects overload here - the story is realistically portrayed to the point where I felt like was aboard the ship myself at times. and the movie doesn't need any help from overblown graphical or computerized images.
Newcomer Barkhad Abdi who plays the Somali pirate leader (Muse) is totally believable and at times has you torn between seeing him as a ruthless pirate and seeing the helplessness that has brought him to this. His portrayal helps greatly in drawing you into the story and the intensity of the situation that they all face.
An excellent movie - extremely thought provoking and well worth viewing.
For those who can't wait to find out more about this remarkable true life adventure - you can read the story.
Captain Richard Phillips:
Listen up, we have been boarded by armed pirates. If they find you, remember, you know this ship, they don't. Stick together and we'll be alright. Good luck.
