Some people have that stage presence that commands the viewer’s attention each time they get up there and sing. Breaking down the singers by decade and by gender we start with the 1960’s and the men who had that charisma and stage presence. There is a saying that goes: you either have it or you don’t and these men had it.

James Brown- James was the ultimate performer who was really theatrical. James would enter the stage with a cape and would begin his show by having a member of his band take it off. When he was through he would kneel down and the cape would be put back on. James Brown may not have had the best singing voice, but he made up for it with enthusiasm and great dance moves. You can see how he influenced Michael Jackson because James could really move. James also had that way of adding sounds to his songs and who wouldn’t want to dance to “I Feel Good”, “Super Bad”, “Get Up” and countless other songs that are his greatest hits.

Additional swag info: James was 5’ 6” tall and a Taurus. He was married four times and had 6 kids.

Tom Jones- Wales produced one powerful singer in Tom Jones. Tom had the hair, the unbuttoned shirt, the gold necklace, the tight pants, and a pair of lungs that really grabbed the listener in. Tom could sing the ballads and the fast numbers with ease. Case in point “The Green, Green Grass of Home” and “Help Yourself.” He also had a way of making the ladies swoon with his dance moves and sex appeal. I attended a concert of his a few years back and Tom had lost none of his energy or his way of grabbing an audience. He is a great performer.

Additional swag info: Standing at 5’10” tall Tom is a Gemini. He has been married since 1957 and had one child by his wife and one child from an affair with a model. He has stated that he has slept with over 250 groupies a year.

Sam Cooke-So much potential and who knows what great heights he would have achieved had he not have been killed. Sam had a great voice smooth and filled with great emotion. He also knew how to stir up an audience especially the females. He could sing ballads like “A Change is Going To Come” and he could equally sing a party song like “Twisting The Night Away.” He had a way of making the women swoon in his day with his great voice and handsome looks.

Additional swag info: Standing at 5’10” tall Sam was an Aquarius. He was married only one time, but the marriage was trouble from both of their extra marital affairs and from the death of their son.

Mick Jagger-Rock and Roll is all about attitude and Mick Jagger had in spades (and he still does). Mick many not be considered handsome and he may not have been the tallest singer around, but when he took the stage all eyes were on him. Mick had the strut, the lips, and limitless energy. When he took the stage he was never one to stand in place he covered it all. He too could sing a ballad like “Time is On My Side” and then rock it out with “I can’t Get No Satisfaction” either way he captivated an audience with his charisma and his talent.

Additional swag info: Standing at 5’10” tall Mick is a Leo. He has been married two times and has had countless affairs. He has had seven children by four different women.

Jim Morrison- the Doors lead singer had the leather pants, the long hair, the full lips and classic looks it was no wonder he had the women in hysterics when he took the stage. He was voted number 47 of the all-time great entertainers because of his wild on stage antics. Jim was a poet in his song writing and he could do a song like “Light My Fire” and then get deep with songs like “The End”. He could be complex and that is what drew his audience to him.

Additional swag info: Standing at 5’11” tall Jim was a Sagittarius. He spent most of his adult life with a woman named Pamela Coruson and he was married briefly to another woman. He wasn’t true to either one of them and was quite a womanizer.

Frank Sinatra- Frank began his career singing for a band. He had the teeny boppers hanging on his every note. Going solo Frank continued to wow his audience with his wonderful tone and great emotion that he could put into a song. His stage presence appealed to the males as well as the females. The males considered him a man’s man and the females swooned the way Frank could make you feel a song. He could sing a torch song case in point “One For My Baby” and then he could lighten up the mood with songs like “Fly Me To The Moon” and “You Make Me Feel So Young”. His career lasted over fifty years so he must have been doing something right.

Additional swag info: Standing at 5’7” tall Frank was a Sagittarius. He was married four times and had three kids by his first wife.

Robert Plant- front man for Led Zeppelin he didn’t mind showing off his chest to the crowd. In fact he won an award for having the best chest in rock. The magazine Rock Scene Magazine readers voted for him. He like Mick Jagger enjoyed being the front man of the band and was known for his movements on the stage whether dancing, or snapping his fingers. His long blond hair made him a rock and roll dream. He could sing softly with a song like “What is and What Should Never Be” and then rock it out with a song like “Stairway To Heaven which starts like a ballad and then ends rocking it out.

Additional swag info: Standing at 5’11” tall Robert is a Leo. He has been married two times and has three children by his first wife.

Ray Charles- Ray Charles lost his eye sight at age 5, but that was just the beginning for him. He went to a school of music and there he learned his craft and then took it to another level. He could sing blues, gospel, country, and soul. Watching Ray on stage you knew he loved performing and he loved music. He could sing a slow ballad like “Georgia On My Mind” and make you feel like you had been born there yourself. He could also be playful and sing a lively tune like, “Hit The Road Jack” and reveal that charm that could captivate an audience.

Additional swag info: Standing at 5’9” tall Ray was a Libra. Ray was married 2 times. He was a very busy man having twelve children with nine different women.

Elvis Presley- from a young age Elvis knew that he wanted to be a singer and thanks to Sam Phillips the world was introduced to the King of Rock and Roll. Elvis was the first to make lewd moves that caused girls to scream, but he had that Southern charm that made him seem less dangerous. Elvis loved country music, rock, pop, and the blues. He could be gentle in songs like “Love Me Tender” and then he could rock out with songs like “Jailhouse Rock”. He knew how to captivate his audience and it is easy to see why he was so loved. He had the looks, the moves, and the powerful singing voice.

Additional swag info: Standing at 6’ tall Elvis was a Capricorn. He married once and had one child by his marriage. After his divorce he lived with two different women at different times in his life.

These men were true super stars. They may not have been the tallest, or the handsomest, but they possessed that confidence that made people be drawn to them. Their legacy will live on and new fans will discover these talented men.

Hi Alecia thanks for your comments. You are right I wonder if they could have broken into the business today when everyone has to be so attractive.

Interesting list. The 60s really were a time of free love and free expression. But you're right these men weren't the best looking or the ones you pick out first in a room but they definitely had a charisma to them.

I would like to see what would've happened had they came out today.
