The Top 10 Creepiest Love Songs

Updated on April 15, 2013

The Fine Line Between Love Song and Stalker Anthem

Some of the most popular love songs, if spoken to a lover, would be creepy or downright declarations of stalking. Professing your undying love and devotion shouldn't make your beloved consider a restraining order. Singing a beautiful love song, on the other hand, requires you to exaggerate.

Take this lens as a reminder to consider the meaning behind a song before you dedicate it to the one you love. The lyrics might frighten him or her away rather than drawing the two of you closer together, especially if you're pining for your ex-love.

On this lens, I'm going to nominate what I think are the Top 10 Creepy Love Songs, from the tenth-creepiest to the most-stalker-appropriate. I'll include the lyrics for each, as well as videos and places to get them, where I can find sources. If you've got a creepier song, let me know. I'll be happy to expand my list! In the meantime, watch out for The Police, Bryan Adams, and Blondie.

Lyrics for Nights on Broadway

The Bee Gees Sing a Creepy Love Song

Okay, my hair bears, you have to stop following your ex around and plotting ways to get rid of the people who "stand between" you. That's just creepy.

Here we are, In a room full of strangers

Standing in the dark

Where your eyes couldn't see me

Well, I had to follow you

Though you did not want me to

But that won't stop my lovin' you

I can't stay away

CHORUS

Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway

Singin' them love songs

Singin' them "straight to the heart" songs

Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway

Singin' them sweet sounds

To that crazy, crazy town

Now in my place, There are so many others

Standin' in the line, How long will they stand between us

Well, I had to follow you

Though you did not want me to

But that won't stop my lovin' you

I can't stay away

CHORUS

I will wait, even if it takes forever

I will wait, even if it takes a lifetime

Somehow I feel inside

You never-ever left my side

Make it like it was before

Even if it takes a lifetime, takes a lifetime, ooh

CHORUS

Singin' them sweet sounds (oh yeah)

To that crazy, crazy town (yeah)

Lyrics for I Will Possess Your Heart

Death Cab for Cutie Live Up to Their Creepy Name

Just the title of this song makes me think of threats that start with "I will possess your heart" and end with the flourish of a knife and "one way or another". I have a vivid imagination that way. Then I listened to it. I'm still scared of them.

How I wish you could see the potential

The potential of you and me

It's like a book elegantly bound

But in a language that you can't read just yet

CHORUS [twice]

You gotta spend some time love

You gotta spend some time with me

And I know that you'll find love

I will possess your heart

There are days when, outside your window,

I see my reflection as I slowly pass

And I long for this mirrored perspective,

when we'll be lovers, lovers at last.

CHORUS x 2

I will possess your heart

I will possess your heart

You reject my advances and desperate pleas

I won't let you let me down so easily, so easily

CHORUS x 3

I will possess your heart

I will possess your heart

I will possess your heart

Lyrics for I Will Follow Him

Little Peggy March Was Creepy, Too

Even way back in the early 60s the stalkers were recording freaky love songs. Sure, it's catchy but would you want Peggy March following you around, swooning whenever she "happened" to bump into you? No thanks!

I love him, I love him, I love him.

And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow.

I will follow him.

Follow him wherever he may go.

There isn't an ocean too deep,

A mountain so high it can keep,

Keep me away.

I must follow him.

Ever since he touched my hand I knew,

That near him I always must be.

And nothing can keep him from me.

He is my destiny.

CHORUS

I love him, I love him, I love him,

And where he goes, I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow.

He'll always be my true love, my true love, my true love,

From now until forever, forever, forever.

I will follow him

Follow him wherever he may go.

There isn't an ocean too deep,

A mountain so high it can keep,

Keep me away, away from my love.

CHORUS

I will follow him (follow him),

Follow him wherever he may go,

There isn't an ocean too deep,

A mountain so high it can keep,

Keep me away, away from my love.

I love him, I love him, I love him

And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow.

I know I'll always love him, I love him, I love him.

And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow.

Watch Music Videos for Creepy Love Songs - Are they really stalkers, or is it love?

Doesn't Carly Simon look an awful lot like Stephen Tyler in this video for You Belong to Me? I added some of the suggestions from the comments here, as well, particularly Ludo's The Horror of Our Love which certainly qualifies as a creepy love song but more "cereal killer" scary than "stalker" song. I've included Radiohead and Creep, though to me that song is more "why bother trying" than "I'm following you around and digging through your garbage". Let me know what you think!

Lyrics for Hello

Lionel Richie Creeps Around in Love

At first listen, Lionel Richie just sounds like a victim of unrequited love. But if you read carefully you'll see that he's really stalking this stranger. You don't tell someone you've never met that you love them. That's just creepy!

I've been alone with you inside my mind

And in my dreams I've kissed your lips a thousand times

I sometimes see you pass outside my door

Hello, is it me you're looking for?

I can see it in your eyes

I can see it in your smile

You're all I've ever wanted

My arms are open wide

'Cause you know just what to say

And you know just what to do

And I want to tell you so much

I love you

I long to see the sunlight in your hair

And tell you time and time again how much I care

Sometimes I feel my heart will overflow

Hello? I've just got to let you know

'Cause I wonder where you are

And I wonder what you do

Are you somewhere feeling lonely

Or is someone loving you?

Tell me how to win your heart

For I haven't got a clue

But let me start by saying

I love you

[repeat last verse]

Lyrics for You Belong to Me

Carly Simon Gets in on the Stalker Act

Let him go, Carly Simon. People don't belong to one another and if he doesn't want to be with you you've got to accept that and move on with your life. I can pretty well guarantee your ex isn't going to be telling his new woman that you love him. Talk about a creepy love song!

Why'd you tell me this?

Were you looking for my reaction?

What do you need to know?

Don't you know I'll always be your girl?

You don't have to prove to me you're beautiful to strangers

I've got loving eyes of my own

You belong to me

Tell her you were fooling

You don't even know her

Tell her that I love you

You belong to me

Can it be, honey, that you're not sure

You belong to me

Thought we'd closed the book, locked the door

You don't have to prove to me that you're beautiful to strangers

I've got loving eyes of my own

And I can tell, I can tell darling

Tell her. tell her that I love you

You belong, you belong, you belong to me

Tell her you were fooling

Tell her she don't even know you

Tell her you were fooling

I know you from a long time ago, baby

Don't leave me to go to her now

You belong to me.

Lyrics for One Way or Another

A Creepy Blondie Love Song

This one may be fun but it reads like a stalker handbook. Sure, some guys wouldn't mind Debbie Harry following them around but why does she want you to buy rat food?

One way or another I'm gonna find ya

I'm gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha

One way or another I'm gonna win ya

I'm gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha

One way or another I'm gonna see ya

I'm gonna meetcha meetcha meetcha meetcha

One day, maybe next week

I'm gonna meetcha, I'm gonna meetcha, I'll meetcha

I will drive past your house

And if the lights are all down

I'll see who's around

REPEAT FIRST VERSE

And if the lights are all out

I'll follow your bus downtown

See who's hanging out

One way or another I'm gonna lose ya

I'm gonna give you the slip, a slip of the lip or another

I'm gonna lose ya, I'm gonna trick ya

One way or another I'm gonna lose ya

I'm gonna trick ya trick ya trick ya trick ya

One way or another I'm gonna lose ya

I'm gonna give you the slip

I'll walk down the mall, stand over by the wall

Where I can see it all, find out who ya call

Lead you to the supermarket checkout

Some specials and rat food, get lost in the crowd

One way or another I'm gonna getcha, I'll getcha, I'll getcha getcha getcha getcha

(Where I can see it all, find out who ya call)

[repeat until fade]

Lyrics for Every Breath You Take

Sting Helps The Police Stalk Someone

Here's another creepy love song that makes following your ex around town and spying on him or her sound romantic. It's not. Move on, Sting, and take your band with you.

Every breath you take, every move you make

Every bond you break, every step you take

I'll be watching you

Every single day, every word you say

Every game you play, every night you stay

I'll be watching you

O can't you see

You belong to me?

How my poor heart aches

With every step you take!

Every move you make, every vow you break

Every smile you fake, every claim you stake

I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I been lost without a trace

I dream at night I can only see your face

I look around but it's you I can't replace

I feel so cold and I long for your embrace

I keep crying baby, baby please

Every move you make, every vow you break

Every smile you fake, every claim you stake

I'll be watching you

Have a listen to the songs, and let me know if you agree that they sound more like poems a stalker would write than love songs for a healthy relationship. I included a few cover song versions in here, as well, if you just can't get enough, and some of the suggestions your fellow readers have added to the guestbook below.

Lyrcis for Obsession

Animotion Gets Honest, but Still Creepy

In truth, I really like this song. I used to dance to it a lot in my misspent youth. But that doesn't mean I can't recognize a stalker song when I hear one. This starts as a song about wanting to be with someone and seems to turn into a kidnapping. Yikes!

You are an obsession, I cannot sleep

I am a possession unopened at your feet

There is no balance, no equality

Be still I will not accept defeat

I will have you, yes I will have you

I will find a way and I will have you

Like a butterfly, a wild butterfly

I will collect you and capture you

CHORUS

You are an obsession, you're my obsession

Who do you want me to be to make you sleep with me

[repeat]

I feed you, I drink you by day and by night

I need you, I need you by sun or candlelight

You protest, you want to leave

You say there's no alternative

Your face appears again, I see the beauty there

But I see danger, stranger beware

A circumstance in your naked dreams

Your affection is not what it seems

CHORUS

My fantasy has turned to madness

All my goodness has turned to badness

My need to possess you has consumed my soul

My life is trembling, I have no control

I will have you, yes I will have you

I will find a way and I will have you

Like a butterfly, a wild butterfly

I will collect you and capture you

CHORUS [repeat to fade]

Lyrics for The Old Apartment

Barenaked Ladies Expose Their Obsession

Honestly, I don't even have to explain this one. Read the lyrics. It's creepy.

Broke into the old apartment

This is where we used to live

Broken glass, broke and hungry

Broken hearts and broken bones

This is where we used to live

Why did you paint the walls?

Why did you clean the floor?

Why did you plaster over the hole

I punched in the door?

This is where we used to live

Why did you keep the mousetrap?

Why did you keep the dishrack?

These things used to be mine

I guess they still are, I want them back

Broke into the old apartment

Forty-two stairs from the street

Crooked landing, crooked landlord

Narrow laneway filled with crooks

This is where we used to live

Why did they pave the lawn?

why did they change the locks?

Why did I have to break it, I only came here to talk

This is where we used to live

How is the neighbour downstairs?

How is her temper this year?

I turned up your TV and stomped on the floor just for fun

I know we don't live here anymore

We bought an old house on the Danforth

She loves me and her body keeps me warm

I'm happy here

But this is where we used to live

Broke into the old apartment

Tore the phone out of the wall

Only memories, fading memories

Blending into dull tableaux

I want them back

My Nominee for the Creepiest Love Song Ever - Everything Bryan Adams Does, He Does for Someone Else

Reckless
Reckless

To be fair, I'm not a Bryan Adams fan, nor did I enjoy the Kevin Costner movie that spawned its overplay. But the song implies that every single thing you do or say or think should revolve around another person. If someone were that obsessed with me, it would be frightening. Besides, he looks creepy on the album cover. ;)

Lyrics for (Everything I Do) I Do It for You

Creepy Bryan Adams

To everyone who finds this to be a beautiful, romantic love song, I apologize. This one creeps me out a lot. Maybe it's the hoarse voice, maybe it's the repeated offers to die for me, maybe it's just the idea that he's saying that there's not one other thing in his whole life besides me. I find that creepy.

Look into my eyes, you will see

What you mean to me

Search your heart, search your soul

And when you find me there you'll search no more

CHORUS

Don't tell me it's not worth tryin' for

You can't tell me it's not worth dyin' for

You know it's true

Everything I do, I do it for you

Look into your heart you will find

There's nothin' there to hide

Take me as I am, take my life

I would give it all, I would sacrifice

CHORUS

There's no love like your love

And no other could give more love

There's nowhere unless you're there

All the time, all the way

Oh, you can't tell me it's not worth tryin' for

I can't help it; there's nothin' I want more

I would fight for you, I'd lie for you

Walk the wire for you, yeah I'd die for you

You know it's true

Everything I do, I do it for you

Share with me the love songs that creep you out or argue with my choices. I'd love to hear your take on this list and anything I've missed!

Gloomy Sunday. Billie Holiday sung it but it was written and performed by a Hungarian gentleman in the 1920s? It was labeled the suicide song because numerous people killed themselves after listening to the lyrics. Simply, the song is about a man who pines away for his dead lover and so wants to be with her he decides to kill himself. There are two endings to this song 1) That leaves you believing he went through with it. 2) The other that it was only a dream. Either way, it's downright creepy stuff.

Since my last boyfriend I have felt so lonely. You know that as I explained that thoroughly in my first email to you. I wished for my heart to be filled with love and happiness and you did that! I have met the perfect guy and I am to be promoted tomorrow at work! It seems that the gods are smiling at me and you are the reason why. I will be your faithful follower for ever. Templeofloveandmoney@gmail.com

To be fair, Carly Simon co-wrote "You Belong to Me" with Michael McDonald, who not only recorded his own version, but is also responsible for "I Keep Forgettin'," which is all stalker ex-boyfriend.

@jeff-missinne-5: Where I used it in the description I meant it to be tongue-in-cheek (hence the quotation marks). As it appears that it's confusing, I'll probably rewrite that part. Thanks for the feedback!

I can't disagree with most of your comments, but as Columbo would say, "just one t'ing..." A stalker might become a serial killer, but a "cereal killer" as you have in a couple places would be a guy who tries to stab a bowlful of corn flakes. Spellcheck strikes again!

I have no idea how Uninvited by Alanis Morisette never makes a stalker list. Not only does she have a stalker, but as the song wears on, you see that she is starting to identify with him. There is a hint of curiosity in there that makes me think that the stalker has a stalker. Or maybe she knew and just let it go..... i dunno. Either way, creepy as hell.

@anonymous: I have lioved Benny Mardones's song "Into the Night" since it came out so many years ago in my teenager years. I still

Absolutely LOVE this song, even now in my early 60's. this is such a hot, passionate song, both music and lyrics. There's never been another song so special in a good way, ever, as far as I am concerned. This is such a classic, great song. The world was a different place and it was a different time when it came out, it did then and still does now, to hear this unbelievable man sing the words to this song with such passion and angst. It touches you where you live. I am just sorry you don't seem able or accepting to appreciate. Each to their own , but this is top favourite to me.

Dr. Lee, Thank you! It happened just like you told to me. To be honest after 3 days of having casted the break-up spell, love spell and marry me spell I was losing faith. All of the sudden Veronica and Michael separated. Michael was calling me on the phone nonstop telling me that he was sorry. Last week we went out and a during a romantic dinner he confessed his love for me and propose to me. For a moment I was in shock. I said YES!!!! We are getting marry at the end of next month. I am in debt with you for a lifetime. Ancientfathersandmothers@gmail.com

Check out the song by Cranes - "Stalk"

      I dream for you

      To be for you

But all the time your window is closed

I see you through the glass...

A reflection of myself maybe falls

Between us when the sun comes out...

So give me life and soul to go

      When the sun shines bright

And give me love and bliss and hope

      In the darkest night

      Your blinds are blind

And your cats want the birds

      In my garden heaven

      Where I'm lodging tonight

...And the glass in your window

      Is killing tomorrow for me...

Closer and closer, we can't get much older

      I'm smashing but breaking,

      My heart has awoken

These windows soon shatter for me

Black on the outside, it's black on the inside

      Together we'll make it

      Darkness sedated to grey

...But the bars at your window

      Are killing tomorrow for me...

Eat You Alive by Limp Bizkit. It's def more creepy than all those mentioned. I love the song, but would never want that guy in the song to find me. He's both violent, and stalking to this poor innocent girl. Then he sings how sorry he is, and shows a softer side. But ultimately ends violently. In the video he is a dirty, greasy guy who's kidnapped a young woman into the woods, he sings this to her. At the end she starts liking him getting the stockholm syndrome and protects him from her dad who wants to kill him.

      Lyrics:

      "If I could approach you

Or even get close to the scent that you left behind

      I'd be fine"

"Hey you, mrs. too-good-to-look-my-way and that's cool

You don't want nothing at all to do with me

But I want you, ain't nothin' wrong with, wanting you

'cause I'm a man and I can think what the hell I want

      You got that straight?"

      "No doubt that

      I'd love to

      Sniff on them panties now"

"I just want to look at you

I just want to look at you

I just want to look at you, all day

      There ain't nothing wrong, no

There ain't nothing wrong with that"

      "I'm sorry, so sorry

      You beauty is so vain

It drives me, yes it drives me

      Absolutely insane"

As you can see, he tries to tell himself there is nothing wrong with what he's doing.

Other additions are, "Paralyzer" by Finger Eleven: he's at a bar watching a girl all night but can't approach her, and over-analyzes the entire situation.

Also "Hey there Delilah", is kinda stalkish, Delilah is a real person who want nothing to do with him, but he wrote this song like they are together just in a long-distance relationship. I love the song, but imagine how the real delilah feels about it.

Every Breath You Take has always creeped me out...Uck.... Have you heard Death Cab for Cutie's "I will follow you into the dark"? Can't tell if the guy is contemplating a murder suicide...

Love of mine some day you will die

      But I'll be close behind

I'll follow you into the dark

Good lens with some good points! Why are these songs OK when it's NOT OK to behave this way? I thought some of these songs were creepy when they were released. A steady diet of this stuff isn't good for anybody!

I love how of the 179 songs on my iPod, "I Will Possess Your Heart" plays while I am reading this article! Right before I read this, I thought of how that was so me! I guess my love life is creepy or stalkerish to you. Who really cares though?!?! If I seriously care what an online journalist writing about stalkers' songs, then I really need to get a life! Poop you, "I Will Possess Your Heart" is one of the best songs ever!

      although we've come

to the end of the road

      still I can't let go

      It unnatural

      You belong to me ,

      I belong to you

Then the spoken part - sounds a little like the stalker is getting violent

I love "Every Breath You Take." It wasn't creepy when it was released, and it's definitely not creepy now. I think it's a very good song. It has a very deep meaning, a meaning that not everyone nowadays understands.

Eh, these aren't really creepy. You want something truly creepy? "Horror Of Our Love" by Ludo. THAT's creepy.

      http://youtu.be/9kQ-0bBkMIY

      "The Horror Of Our Love"

I'm a killer, cold and wrathful

Silent sleeper, I've been inside your bedroom

      I've murdered half the town

left you love notes on their headstones

I'll fill the graveyards until I have you.

Moonlight walking, I smell your softness

carnivorous and lusting to track you down among the pines.

I want you stuffed into my mouth

hold you down and tear you open, live inside you -

      love, I'd never hurt you.

But I'll grind against your bones until our marrows mix

      I will eat you slowly...

      [Chorus]

Oh, the horror of our love

never so much blood pulled through my veins.

Oh, the horror of out love... never so much blood

I wake in terror, blackbirds screaming

dark cathedrals spilling midnight on the altars

      I'm your servant, my immortal

pale and perfect, such unholy heaving -

the statues close their eyes, the room is changing

break my skin and drain me.

      Ancient language, speak through fingers

the awful edges where you end and I begin

inside your mouth I cannot see -

there's catastrophe in everything I'm touching

as I sweat I crush you.

And I hold your beating chambers until they beat no more

      you die like angels sing...

      [Chorus]

Oh, the horror of our love

never so much blood pulled through my veins.

Oh, the horror of out love... never so much blood

You're a ghost love, nightgown flowing

your body blue and walking along the continental shelf

you are a dream among the sharks

beautiful and terrifying, lit and restless

      we dance in dark suspension.

And you bury me in the ocean floor beneath you

where they'll never hear us scream...

      [Chorus]

Oh, the horror of our love

never so much blood pulled through my veins.

Oh, the horror of out love... never so much blood

Awesome. I love this lens. "Every Breath You Take" is definitely creepy. I also think the Beatles' "Run For Your Life" is awfully creepy. (I'd rather see you dead, little girl, than to see you with another man.) And Adam Lambert's "For Your Entertainment" is pretty sick too. :)

Very interesting take and way to look at these songs. I had to chuckle a few times because when you put it that way yes I suppose they do seem a bit stalkerish. However, in their true contexts they are quite different, as the music sets the tone, still great job!

In my humble opinion, it's sick how you find creepiness in laudable romanticism (for instance in Bryan Adams' Everything I Do). Maybe it's the modern fashion to get creeped out or find just about everything offensive...

Excellent! That Death Cab for Cutie song sounded so different when it hit the radio. I love listening to it. Matchbox Twenties 'Push you around' song was a bit unsettling, but I loved listening to that too. I like the chorus effect, and lastly, I'm a Creep. Yeah, Radiohead.
