Desperate Housewives... Before There Was Reality

Updated on May 30, 2014

I know what you're thinking - the last thing you want is to get hooked on another reality series. What you probably didn't realize is that before the Desperate Housewives reality series swept through the market, there was a widely successful and comedic series that was far from reality - the original Desperate Housewives.

Luckily, the popularity of the show led to 8 successful seasons, which gives people like you and me 180 (yes, 180!) episodes to sit through on those rainy days. In fact, I owe my sanity to this series when I had my first son. Every midnight feeding was paired with the ladies of Wisteria Lane, whether it was a 10 minute snack or a dreaded 2 hour fuss session. The magic of the show is the balance of drama and comedy - stolen identities, hidden secrets, even murder are portrayed in a way that leaves a smirk on your face.

As with all great shows, the four main characters embody extreme personalities that you find yourself relating to at different times. Bree, the perfect housewife with the spotless home and award-winning recipe for everything. Gabrielle, the beautiful former model who is blunt and honest to a fault, Susan, the sweet, kind, and accident-prone author who is always chasing love. And Lynette, the working mom of 5 who is constantly juggling her ever-changing work-life balance.

As I spend my sleepless nights watching Desperate Housewives, I find myself thinking of Bree as I iron, Lynette as I write, Gaby as I get ready, and Susan while drinking my morning coffee. This is a rare series that manages to keep me happy, motivated, and feeling good about myself. The good news is that with 180 episodes, you will have forgotten what happened in the beginning by the time you make it to the end.

Which Wisteria Lane neighbor to you relate to most?

Did you enjoy Desperate Housewives as much as I did? How did you spend your time watching?

Good review, although I was never a fan of the show.
