Dick Mathis, Model Airplane Designer
Dick "Fast Richard" Mathis is a model airplane designer and pilot. He designed many successful control line and free flight airplanes in the late 1960's through the early 1970's. His most famous control line design is the Chizler and his most famous free flight design is the Bounty Hunter.
Cherokee and Comanche
Two great 20-size trainers...
The Cherokee and Comanche are 2 designs that would make excellent control line trainers. Wing area is 306 sq. inches, so they should be flown on 52' lines with a .15 for power.
An excellent Stunt trainer...
The Coyote is a .40 sized bird that makes an excellent Stunt flyer. I call it a "trainer" because it's easy to build and fly, but it is also capable of flying a contest winning stunt pattern.
A full-bodied Stint ship...
The Chizler is a full bodies Stunt plane that flies extremely well.
Flying Around - A great introduction to Control Line flying...
Flying Around is a pretty good introduction to Control Line flying. It covers just about everything you need to know to get started, including tips on how to select your first Control Line airplane, the different types of Control Line flying, how to learn to fly, and how to NOT get dizzy. The only thing I'm not sure about is the authorship... Amazon lists Jim Harris as the author but the copy I have says it's Harry Higley. I guess it doesn't really matter - regardless of who wrote it, this book is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn how to build and fly Control Line airplanes.
