Best Dinosaur Movies for Kids - Raah!

Updated on September 6, 2014

Movies for kids who love dinosaurs

There are some great dinosaur movies for kids around. We've put together a collection of our favorites, recommended by two young dino fans and their parents. Come and meet Littlefoot and Alladar, visit Dinotopia watch a sloth raise a T-Rex. Funny, endearing, educational - dinosaur movies have it all.

A dinosaur movie on DVD or blu-ray makes a fantastic gift for kids. Kids happily watch the same movie over and over again, learning more from it each time and enjoying being able to predict what happens next. As a parent I love to get good quality movies as gifts for my boys - I know they will watch them and they don't take up much space! (And sometimes I even enjoy watching them myself :-)

We've got classics like Land Before Time and more recent hits like Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

And yes, we're looking forward to the new Disney Pixar The Good Dinosaur movie. But that's not out at theaters until 2014. Don't worry there are plenty of other good dinosaur movies we can watch while we wait!

Featured Dinosaur Movie

Our current favorite dino DVD

Prehistoric Park

@ Amazon

This is the current favorite in our house. Naturalist Nigel Marven stars in this documentary style series (288 minutes total). Marven is responsible for saving dinosaurs from extinction by bringing them through a time tunnel to Prehistoric Park. It's done in a realistic documentary style with a voiceover by David Jason. It has my four year old captivated. There have been a few slightly scary bits, but he has been fine with them. Prehistoric Park gets wonderful reviews on Amazon, lots of families have enjoyed it.

Bob the Builder: Big Dino Dig Movie

@ Amazon

My younger son has requested Bob the Builder: Big Dino Dig Movie for his third birthday. It's out on June 14 2011 and available for pre-order before that. It looks very good from the trailer.

Go Diego Go! - The Great Dinosaur Rescue - Toddlers and Preschoolers / Age 2-5

The Great Dinosaur Rescue is a double-length Diego episode. It's packed with singing and actions for the kids to join in. My toddler and preschooler boys really love this DVD. They get up a 'stop like a dinosaur' and help Maia the Maiasaura to get back to Egg Island and her family. The double episode also features Alicia, Diego's sister and a dinosaur expert. The DVD includes some bonus episodes too.

Land Before Time Movies

There are move than 10 Land Before Time movies featuring Littlefoot, Cera the Triceratops, Petrie the Pterodactyl, Spike the Stegosaurus and other friends.

These are lovely films that we watch over and over and have done since my oldest boy was 2. The movies are very musical with great songs that the kids sing along too. (More dinosaur songs here) I actually enjoy the 'Littlefoot films' as they are known in our house.

The Land Before Time (Anniversary Edition)

The Land Before Time (Anniversary Edition)
The Land Before Time (Anniversary Edition)

Land Before Time is a children's classic. This is the anniversary edition of the original Land Before Time movie. It sees Littlefoot the Apatosaurus and his friends travel to the safety of the great valley. This is a wonderful movie, it covers some difficult issues very well. It's much darker than the series of films that followed after it.

For smaller children we would recommend saving this film for later and watching the other movies in the series.

Disney's Dinosaur - PG (Parental Guidance) Age 6-11

Disney's Dinosaur features Aladar the Iguanodon who is raised by a lemur family. This is a well animated movie which will appeal to kids age 6-11. Our preschooler adores dinosaurs and has watched this film, but he will get much more from it when he's older.

"Join the action-packed adventure of a group of dinosaurs overcoming enormous challenges through courage, loyalty, and hope in Disney's DINOSAUR, a special effects phenomenon! Set 65 million years ago, DINOSAUR tells the compelling story of an iguanodon named Aladar, who is separated from his own kind and raised by a clan of lemurs, including the wisecracking Zini and the compassionate Plio. When a devastating meteor shower plunges their world into chaos, Aladar and his family follow a herd of dinosaurs heading for the safety of the "nesting grounds." Along the way, Aladar befriends Baylene, the dignified, elderly brachiosaur with a take-no-prisoners attitude; Eema, the unstoppable styrachosaur; and Neera, a feisty fellow iguanodon. Together, they must stand strong amid food and water shortages, the threat of attacks by carnotaurs, and Aladar's run-ins with the herd's stubborn leader, Kron. As the trip becomes one pulse-quickening adventure after another, it also forges friendships that no hardship can destroy. A landmark in filmmaking technology, Disney's DINOSAUR is a breathtaking spectacle filled with adventure, fun, and life lessons that the whole family will love! " - Amazon

Dinotopia - Quest for the Ruby Sunstone

Dinotopia - Quest for the Ruby Sunstone

Kex a boy from the present time ends up in a world where dinosaurs and humans live together. Has plenty of baddies and builds up an imaginary world with lots of detail. For kids up to around age 7.

My preschooler boy enjoys this as a change from the Land Before Time Movies.

We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story

This is a daft family film. The crazy storyline involves dinosaurs being brought into modern times and given some intelligence. Suitable from around age 4/5 up. Great fun.

We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story
We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story

"For every kid who ever wanted to meet a real dinosaur, Steven Spielberg presents We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story – the animated tale of four prehistoric pals in the most awesome adventure since the dawn of time! Join Rex, Woog, Elsa and Dweeb as they time-travel to New York City to meet their biggest fans – modern-day kids – and make all of their wildest dreams come true. Featuring the voices of John Goodman, Jay Leno, Martin Short and Rhea Perlman, We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story is a magical film the whole family will enjoy. " - Amazon

Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - PG

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

This is a great family movie with plenty of jokes to keep adults amused and lots for kids to enjoy. Manny and Ellie the Mammoths are expecting a baby. So Sid the Sloth decides to adopt. The dinosaur eggs he chooses hatch into 3 baby T-Rex - uh oh! We love this film and the other Ice Age movies and watch it regularly. Lots of laugh out loud moments.

Dinosaur Island

A full length feature film for older kids. The theme is modern, but the creatures are prehistoric! A reality game show sends four kids to a remote island in a survival challenge. But instead they end up on an island full of dinosaurs including T-Rex and Pterodactyls.

Dinosaur TV Shows and Cartoons

Dino Squad

Dino Squad was originally broadcast in 2007 and is now available on DVD. A group of students turn into dinosaur heroes. The squad must protect the earth from the evil Victor Veloci with the help of their science teacher. The cartoon has lots of dinosaur facts with an action adventure storyline.

Dino Squad: Go Dino!
Dino Squad: Go Dino!

The Dino Squad: Go Dino! DVD features the first episodes of Dino Squad.

There are several Dino Squad DVDs to collect.

Valley of the Dinosaurs

@ Amazon

Here's an interesting dinosaur cartoon TV series from the 70s, released on DVD. It does feel dated and I wasn't sure what my kids would make of it, but they were mesmorized! A modern (well 1970s!) family gets taken back to the time of the dinosaurs where cavemen are also living (hmm). The father John Butler is a science teacher who knows all sorts of useful information - just as well, it's dangerous in the valley of the dinosaurs.

The DVD is 344 minutes long. So the kids (and parents) will be occupied for ages with this one.

If you can't get it on Amazon then try eBay:

Denver the Last Dinosaur

Another vintage dinosaur cartoon, from the 80s this time, it's Denver the Last Dinosaur. This time a dinosaur is living in modern times (well 1980s!) and makes friends with a group of kids.

Dinosaur Facts DVD

Amazing World of Dinosaurs

@ Amazon

If you're looking for a factual dinosaur DVD for kids then try the new Amazing World of Dinosaurs released in 2012.

Anna and Tyler are the teenage hosts of this 6-part educational series which teaches kids all about dinosaurs. See the video excerpt below.

3D Dinosaur Movies

Now I have to admit, there's not a brilliant selection of 3D dinosaur movies, other than the superb Ice Age 3. The others get pretty mixed reviews. Dinosaur enthusiasts might really enjoy them though.

Dinosaurs Alive! [Blu-ray 3D]

It'd have to be 'Dinosaur' that was my favourite. Having said that, if we're classing 'Toy Story 3' as a dinosaur movie then that would trump it! :D
