Dirty Dancing- an 80s Movie with a Great Soundtrack

Updated on November 10, 2013

I hadn't heard of the Dirty Dancing movie until a friend asked me for the soundtrack when I asked what they wanted for their birthday. Once I’d seen the movie I had to agree it is a great soundtrack. And of course Patrick Swayze was red hot.

The movie is a coming-of-age film about a young girl Frances, who everyone calls "Baby," on vacation with her parents and older sister. Her father is a physician and is not happy when Baby forms an attachment to the resorts dance instructor, Johnny Castle. If you love this movie too then play one of the videos below as you read so you can enjoy the memories!

The movie was a low-budget film with no major stars that became a box office hit. It was also the first movie to sell more than a million copies on home video (I still have my video). The lead roles were played by Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze and a lot of the movies popularity is due to the "dirty dancing" of the title, where everyone appears to be having fun.

The Plot

The movie is set in 1963. At the resort Baby helps someone carry watermelons to the staff quarters and sees them partying and dancing to the mambo. Partly embarrassed and partly intrigued she has an impromptu dance lesson from Johnny. She has a crush on him, and later finds his regular dance partner, Penny, is pregnant to Robbie, a waiter who is showing interest in her sister Lisa.

Baby offers to help get the money needed for Penny to have an abortion, and a plot is hatched for her to fill in as a substitute dancer for her at a nearby resort while Penny has the operation. Baby borrows money from her father and has to learn the dance moves and there is plenty of frustration on both sides as Johnny and Penny teach her. The dance involves a final lift at the end, which they spend a lot of time practicing. Lots of great dancing and good music.

The dance goes reasonably well but Baby is too nervous to do the lift at the end. When they return to the resort Penny is in agony from a backstreet abortion and Baby asks her father, a doctor, to help. He is helps Penny but is furious with Baby and gets the impression Johnny was the person responsible for getting Penny pregnant.

By the end of the film, all is set right. Johnny and Baby dance the final dance of the season and she manages the lift!

Patrick Swayze had acted in movies before, but this was the one that really put him on the map. He went on to star in many other movies and in 1991 was voted the sexiest man alive. He died from pancreatic cancer in 2009. Jennifer Grey had a nose job after Dirty Dancing but it went so wrong that even close friends didn't recognize her, and never achieved such a major role again.

You can watch the movie on Instant Video from Amazon for under $2.
