Soundtrack for the Disney Pixar Movie Brave

Updated on September 8, 2014

All about the movie soundtrack for Brave

Movie soundtracks are often sweeping orchestral pieces that set the mood for the scene or compilations of period pop music that set the stage for the movie. But the soundtrack for the Disney Pixar movie Brave promises to be a bit more than that since setting a mood here involves evoking the Scottish highlands.

Patrick Doyle, who happens to be Scottish, has been tasked with creating the score for the movie, making him just the fourth composer ever in 25 years of PIxar films. He plans to bring his knowledge of Scottish music to play, which means (thank goodness!) it will be far more than just a bunch of bagpipes. Expect everything from Gaelic chants to a rousing drinking song in this score.

You'll find all kinds of information here about the Brave soundtrack, including reviews, the tracklist, samples and trailers for the movie.

About the Movie: Brave

Set in medieval Scotland, Brave is the story of the impetuous Merida, who wants nothing more than to be a great archer. She certainly doesn't want to be a typical princess. But her mother has other ideas for her, pushing her to conform to the traditions of the clan and marry. The conflict comes to a head during an archery competition for Merida's hand, leading Merida to run away and make an ill-fated wish that turns her mother and brothers into bears. Her quest to break the spell, restore her family and avoid war takes her all over Scotland as she seeks to make things right.

A Taste of the Music From Brave

One of the final trailers includes a bit of the music from the movie. Starting around 1:54, you'll hear Julie Fowlis.

About the Composer

Composer: Patrick Doyle

A career as a composer wasn't precisely what Patrick Doyle had in mind. He was out to be an actor and was part of Kenneth Branagh's company in the 80s.

But being in that particular company at that particular time set him on a different path. Doyle had the opportunity to score some music for one of the company's acts, garnering him great reviews and opening the door to bigger projects. Like Branagh's big, big, big movie Henry V.

Since then, Doyle has scored for other Branagh projects such as Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet as well as other period pieces, but action flicks like Thor and Rise of the Planet of the Apes are also among the more than 40 films he's done music for. He's even been known to sing a bit in some of his works.

One of the best things about Doyle for this project is that he is actually Scottish, which means he knows there is more to the music than bagpipes and plans to bring the sound he remembers from his childhood to the score.

Brave Soundtrack Tracklist

The Brave soundtrack is out! And looking at the titles certainly gives us a picture of the story since the scores are named after the scenes they're in. Looks like the opening credits will be underscored by music from Julie Fowlis, then we have the collaboration between Birdy and Grammy Award winning Mumford and Sons. (Birdy has a song on the Hunger Games CD also).

There's a drinking song by King Fergus titled the Song of Mordu. (Mordu is the bear who bit off Fergus' leg.) And I'm guessing that any Gaelic chanting will be part of or in the background of one of the scores. Check out samples of the songs all at once on the main soundtrack page.

Just watched the DVD with niece, she went home (has already seen), I was totally entranced with movie, but the music was magical. Have always loved Celtic music and this does not disappoint! The last one is just hauntingly beautiful!

@anonymous: I didn't stay that long and haven't had a chance to see it again to make it that far. As far as I know, the end credits song is Learn Me Right. I don't know of another.

@anonymous: That would be the "Learn Me Right" song sung by Birdy. Not sure why it's the third one on the soundtrack when it comes at the end of the movie.
