Dulcimers & the Goddess' That Play Them

Updated on August 30, 2017

All About Dulcimers

Joni Mitchell and Cyndi Lauper have both included the dulcimers in their music. It has a lovely folk style sound. Recently my husband got me one! Yikes! How do I play it? Is it hard to learn? Can I learn how to play it online? What do I need to know about how to take care of it? Should I get a dulcimer case for it? So many questions, so I decided that since I am going to look these things up anyway I might as well share the info!

Sooo what the heck is a dulcimer? It's a musical instrument with a sounding board or box, usually trapezoidal in shape, over which strings are stretched... yup it is a stringed instrument! It is normally played by being struck with hand-held hammers. Some have as little as 3 strings and some up to 5. There are a few different kinds of dulcimers I have discovered, there are mountain dulcimers, hammered dulcimers, Appalachian dulcimers,American hammered dulcimers.. wow, who knew? Of course if you have a dulcimer they require dulcimer accessories, strings, stands, cases, beginners and intermediate books, DVDs, songs collections and more!. Well I am just a beginner so I guess I will get stuff as I go along. Hope you enjoy this lens on them and decide to join me in my journey.. my goddess dulcimer journey!

"California" by Joni Mitchell (lyrics) - Care to sing along? Well.. here ya go, here are the lyrics!

Sitting in a park in Paris, France

Reading the news and it sure looks bad

They won't give peace a chance

That was just a dream some of us had

Still a lot of lands to see

But I wouldn't want to stay here

It's too old and cold and settled in its ways here

Oh, but California

California I'm coming home

I'm going to see the folks I dig

I'll even kiss a Sunset pig

California I'm coming home

I met a redneck on a Grecian isle

Who did the goat dance very well

He gave me back my smile

But he kept my camera to sell

Oh the rogue, the red red rogue

He cooked good omelettes and stews

And I might have stayed on with him there

But my heart cried out for you, California

Oh California I'm coming home

Oh make me feel good rock'n roll band

I'm your biggest fan

California, I'm coming home

CHORUS:

Oh it gets so lonely

When you're walking

And the streets are full of strangers

All the news of home you read

Just gives you the blues

Just gives you the blues

So I bought me a ticket

I caught a plane to Spain

Went to a party down a red dirt road

There were lots of pretty people there

Reading Rolling Stone, reading Vogue

They said, "How long can you hang around?"

I said "a week, maybe two,

Just until my skin turns brown

Then I'm going home to California"

California I'm coming home

Oh will you take me as I am

Strung out on another man

California I'm coming home

CHORUS:

Oh it gets so lonely

When you're walking

And the streets are full of strangers

All the news of home you read

More about the war

And the bloody changes

Oh will you take me as l am?

Will you take me as l am?

Will you?

Debate ~What's better a dulciimer or guitar?

I know that most are not going to pick a dulcimer over a guitar and to be honest neither am I (lol) but they do make a lovely sound don't you think?

What makes a better sound?

Fairies Illustrations -Music, Art and Sorting Out Feelings of Passion

Music and passion go hand in hand.. or at least that is how "I" feel. Passion does not rest, no, it is noticing every single thing around you, feeling it and then acting on that gift because you cannot help yourself.

We all must decide on our own passions and relentlessly march toward them. March forward towards the grim reaper and those drawings that seem too much at times.

PASSION IS TRULY A GIFT

Passion cannot be put aside, it is emotion felt deeply.

Sometimes it almost feels like too much like grim reaper artwork and I would love to run from it. I would at times be Humpty Dumpty fallen from the wall. I can't. It is the overwhelming presence of something you simply cannot control. As an artist painting emotions, fairies illustrations or beautiful women it often feels like drowning.

When I find that space that gives me the satisfaction of meeting my goal, finding that glint in the eye or just a simple highlight somewhere in the painting and it all feels worth it... to feel too much.

Someone i know was pledging for a sorority once. You know how that goes? If not, you have known rejection I am sure at least once?

Girls go to different houses and some get invites back. Some... get no invites back at all. Ah yes a real grim reaper artwork, an illustration.

I told a friend about this once and I just began crying because I could not get those girls without a single invitation out of my mind and heart. She asked why I had to feel things so deeply. I just kept crying. I would be Humpty Dumpty fallen no matter that it only be a drawing.

I know why though. I feel things deeply because I want to.

It is a decision to feel life and know that there is more than you in it.

It is picking up a single leaf and seeing the intricacy of it. It is knowing that if that leaf is that special as to have curves and veins and sometimes a tinge of color from the flower that might emerge to bring fruit, then wow... look at our own selves.

I am overwhelmed if I choose to be, I do it seems.

I do try to notice the young girl without an invitation in this fairies illustration and much more than that. I notice because my heart is open to feeling things with passion and I think that is the artists way.

Yes, it is difficult because it you notice the young woman without an invite you must also recognize the bigger picture like Darfur and suffering. It can become overwhelming.

As an artist or poet or anything that draws strong feelings passion is always a gift.

PICTURED IS MY SCULPTURE "BLEEDING WINGS 5"

Joni Mitchell's ~sings "A Case of You" with her dulcimer

Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You"

"A Case of You" more sing along!

"A Case of You" by Joni Mitchell

Just before our love got lost you said

"I am as constant as a northern star"

And I said "Constantly in the darkness

Where's that at?

If you want me I'll be in the bar"

On the back of a cartoon coaster

In the blue TV screen light

I drew a map of Canada

Oh Canada

With your face sketched on it twice

Oh you're in my blood like holy wine

You taste so bitter and so sweet

Oh I could drink a case of you darling

Still I'd be on my feet

oh I would still be on my feet

Oh I am a lonely painter

I live in a box of paints

I'm frightened by the devil

And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid

I remember that time you told me you said

"Love is touching souls"

Surely you touched mine

'Cause part of you pours out of me

In these lines from time to time

Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine

You taste so bitter and so sweet

Oh I could drink a case of you darling

And I would still be on my feet

I would still be on my feet

I met a woman

She had a mouth like yours

She knew your life

She knew your devils and your deeds

And she said

"Go to him, stay with him if you can

But be prepared to bleed"

Oh but you are in my blood

You're my holy wine

You're so bitter, bitter and so sweet

Oh, I could drink a case of you darling

Still I'd be on my feet

I would still be on my feet

btw music makes a wonderful gift

music defined:

noun

The art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

How to play Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" on dulcimer

I've been watching this guy... over and over! ~smile

Cyndi Lauper "True Colors"

A true goddess song

"True Colors" lyrics

True Colors lyrics

Songwriters: Billy Steinberg;Thomas Kelly

You with the sad eyes

Don't be discouraged

Oh, I realize

It's hard to take courage

In a world full of people

You can lose sight of it all

And the darkness inside you

Can make you feel so small

But I see your true colors

Shining through

I see your true colors

And that's why I love you

So don't be afraid to let them show

Your true colors

True colors

Are beautiful like a rainbow

Show me a smile then

Don't be unhappy

Can't remember when

I last saw you laughing

If this world makes you crazy

And you've taken all you can bear

You call me up

Because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors

( From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/c/cyndi-lauper-lyrics/... )

Shining through

I see your true colors

And that's why I love you

So don't be afraid to let them show

Your true colors

Your true colors

Are beautiful like a rainbow

Can't remember when I last saw you laughing

If this world makes you crazy

You've taken all you can bear

You call me up

Because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors

Cyndi Lauper ~"True Colors"

True Colors...Music is a wonderful companion to doing art

Speaking of "True Colors", Art will bring you Into a world of wonder if you notice all the colors. Art should bring the viewer into a sphere of wonder, which is what made Leonardo da Vinci such an extraordinary role model, not just artists, but for all who long to know themselves, the world around them and beyond.

Leonardo da Vinci asked questions of himself, just like a child would do. He fed his curiosity by doing research on whatever met his fancy and felt captivated by the simple, because it revealed the nakedness of the complex, so that it might be understood.

Everyone in every single thing has a beginning. Everyone in every single thing also has an amazing opportunity to start afresh on any road they choose toward something brilliant and find that the simplest things in life are after full recognition are actually intricate in by their mere existence.

Consider Matisse, who said to FEEL music as well as the color.

Ahh my Matisse, he gave us the treasure of a full array of new sensations to the eye.

Ponder that and try to find value in all artistic expression through color alone.

Colors can surface everywhere for you... if you decide. Simple as that, just decide and then begin a journey of a da Vinci discovery. Look for as many colors as you can possibly find in anything and everything. If you paint? Try squeezing out colors from every single tube of paint you have. When you paint try to fit ALL their brilliance somewhere, even if it is just a trace.

Colors are not always what you think they are, no, mountains are not normally green or brown and the sky is most definitely not always blue. You knew that though right? Take it a step beyond those things known to you though, learn about color, and,

Try...falling in love with "True Colors"... smile.

Pondering ... Sooo what the heck is a dulcimer? Ah, it is quite musical. I think angels are playing dulcimers instead of harps. You know?
