Ed Sheeran Songs are both Sweetness and Light
One of the best things about being the mum of an emerging teenager is that I get to listen to the all latest music.
Some of it leaves me cold, and some has me dancing round the kitchen, I join in and have been known to sing quite well down my wooden spoon mic! It’s all such fun.
The Album +
However, when I heard Ed Sheeran's + I actually stopped and listened. He immediately caught my attention because it sounded as though he had something to sya.
I was struck primarily by his male sounding voice, I was so used to listening to men singing in falsetto that it was almost a relief to hear someone who didn't need to hit a top note in order to be deemed a good singer.
Then his style kicked in, he has a laid back sort of love lost style, a struggling artist who is certainly up and coming!
His hard work and determination to succeed ring through his wonderfully naïve lyrics. He is very young (born in 1991), and so his lyrics sometimes jar, and with the amount of alcohol he consumes, I’m surprised he can get out of bed in the mornings to pursue his career, but he obviously does - and very well.
+ is Ed Sheeran's debut album, and is extremely engaging.
His critics say he is trying to show off but I don't agree I think he's just very talented.
He fuses romance with reggae and is good on his loop pedal, so I can’t help feeling very pleased that Ed Sheeran is succeeding in a very tough music scene because he deserves to.
His songs describe his life and his various love relationships, and his relationship with the music industry.
His big hit song on this album The A Team, won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. It is an insightful lyric, that talks about the pitiful existence of an 18 year old girl who is hooked on heron. The lyrics are hard hitting, they actually give me the creeps, but they are very cleverly contrasted with a beautiful melody. The A Team was also nominated as best song in Germany in 2013 and he performed it with Elton John during the ceremony evening.
In 2012 he won two Brit Awards for Best British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act and he also began to make his mark in the USA.
Ed Sheeran + is an album that reminds me of the sort of songs I listened to when I was young. My favorite songs are, The A Team because it is very well observed and performed, and Grade 8 because it’s uplifting and groovy (ha! bet you haven’t heard that word in years!)
My son is a keen songwriter, and he enjoys the way Ed Sheeran mixes genres like rock and grime – but then he is only 13 and has yet to understand style.
I like the way Ed Sheeran talks to us, wears his heart on his sleeve, and lets us into his life. And don’t you just love his shock of red hair!
This album included many songs that he wrote before he went to the USA in 2013. They give me hope. If he remains true to himself he will certainly survive the tough music business. I look forward to hearing his new work, which he says will be an album with no name...so sweet!
His new album, which he recorded in Los Angeles, California called X ( read as Multiply) did get a name after all!
It has hit the top of the charts in both the UK and the USA. I haven't listened to all of it yet, but I have heard a few tracks and judging it by these it seems a bit more upbeat and musical. I am sure that I'll like it very much and look forward to hearing it all. I will add something here about it later.
