Eddie Money

Introduction to the Legend - Eddie Money

Eddie was born on March 21, 1949 in Brooklyn, New York. His real name is Edward Joseph Mahoney. While there may be a few people who don't know who Eddie Money is, there will be very few who haven't heard some of his songs; maybe Rick from Geico. Eddie is a very gifted musician as well and plays the guitar, saxophone, harmonica, keyboards and Synthesizer. Going back to 1974, Eddie produced what seemed to be hit after hit resulting in two platinum LP albums and three gold singles (Hold On, Two Tickets to Paradise and Maybe I'm a Fool), until he began to struggle with drug addiction in the mid to late 1980s.

What many may not know about Eddie is that he started off his career as a law enforcement recruit with the NYPD, just like his father, grandfather and brother. However Eddie had a wild streak that wouldn't be tamed and so he instead pursued his passion, music. Visit the Eddie Money Website!

Chasing His Dream to California

Eddie was often in trouble growing up, both in and out of school. One thing he was sure of was his love of music. His first band, The Grapes of Wraith, didn't do anything and was merely a group of friends playing music, but it did give Eddie a taste of something he would never forget. He soon left home to chase his dream in Berkley, California, where he found himself in 1968 once again in trouble, this time for drugs and theft. He claims the marijuana plants found in his apartment where his roommate's, but regardless he spent several weeks in jail and within days of his release was arrested again for stealing a bottle of soda from a store. He was known (according to him) as "Freddie Food Stamps" because he didn't have a dime, and later as a joke he changed his name to Eddie "Money."

A few years later Eddie began to once again take his music pursuit seriously and hired the voice coach who had trained such greats as Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand. He and some friends formed a band called the Rockets and began enjoying some success in area clubs. Eddie would get his break performing at an amateur night when promoter Bill Graham noticed him; within a year Eddie had his first album. The self titled album reached number 37 on the charts, led by two of his first big songs "Baby Hold On" and "Two Tickets to Paradise," both of which were Top 40 hits.

Eddie Money went on to produce quite a list of albums. They are:
