My Trip To The Ellen DeGeneres Show

Updated on December 30, 2010

My Trip To The Ellen DeGeneres Show

I think Ellen DeGeneres rocks. She is so happy and funny. I also think Ellen DeGeneres is one of the kindest people that I have never had the pleasure of meeting, and feel that the world would be a better place if there were more people like Ellen. I recently went to a taping of the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Here is the story of my experience.

My Trip To The Ellen DeGeneres Show

I went to the Ellen DeGeneres show! Here is the short version of my experience.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show is taped at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California.

We requested tickets online through the Ellen Show web site about a month before the show. We received "stand by" tickets and not "guaranteed" tickets. As instructed, we arrived hours early for check in. We checked in (showing our Drivers License) and we were issued a number. We had a few hours to spare before show time so we took advantage of this by shopping at the stores down the street. We arrived back at the studio on time only to wait another 2 hours before show time. As we waited we were entertained by watching an episode of The Ellen Show on the big TVs in the waiting area.

About an hour before show time they started having people line up according to the number they were issued. We were escorted in groups across the street to the show's studio. As you enter the studio you go through security. No cameras allowed. I saw the guard confiscate a lighter so I'm assuming that lighters are not allowed don't bring one if you go. The first area we entered was the riff raff (or is it riff raft?) room. Basically, it's a nice big room with "Ellen" products that you can shop for, nice seating and a few large TV screens on the wall. From here, if you were one of the lucky ones, you were escorted up the stairs and seated in the studio. We, unfortunately, were not the lucky ones. The seating filled up about 15 people before us. Yes, I missed it by about 15 people. However, they did have room for 1 more person. Most people came in groups of 2 or more and they weren't willing to leave their friends behind to go in. But I didn't care if I got left behind in order for my friend to go in. Why? Because I knew my friend really, really, really wanted to see Ellen so I was willing to let her go in without me. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Ellen fan. Huge. However, my friend was like a 5 year old on Christmas morning...that's how bad she wanted to see Ellen. So when they announced that they had room for one more person and asked if there was a "party of one", I shouted "yes" and then literally shoved my friend to the front of the line. I did it so fast that I don't think anyone else even had time to respond. So to make a long story short, my friend was in the audience and I waited in the riff raff room for her. I could hear the audience and watch the show on the big TV screens...but couldn't see Ellen or any of the guests. Clint Eastwood was one of the guests.

While waiting for the show to finish taping I passed the time by watching the show on the TV screens, shopping for "Ellen" merchandise (I bought my cousin who is fighting breast Cancer one of Ellen's pink ribbon pins)...and taking photos of myself in the cute little photo booth they had ($3.00 for 6 photos). Oh, about the photo booth.... They had white boards that you could write messages on with a marker and take photos with them. I was told that the staff in the sound booth could see people in the photo I wrote on the boards things like "Ellen help! I'm being held hostage in the riff raff room, send food". The next photo (there were 6 of them) said, "send money", the next said, "send beer", the last one said "send Clint" (referring to her guest Clint Eastwood ). But I'm assuming nobody in the sound booth saw me because Ellen, nor her staff, sent food, money, beer or Clint. LOL. Other people were writing things like "Ellen, we'll be back" and "Ellen, you rock" I guess my request for rescuing me from the riff raff room or sending money and beer was a little extreme (haha).

In the riff raff room they held a raffle for the people that weren't able to get into the studio for the taping. They raffled off 4 tickets to the Christmas show. I, unfortunately, didn't win one. I was so disappointed but happy for the 4 people that did win. EVERYBODY wants to go to the Christmas show because they give away sooo much stuff during the show. They also gave away 4 "Ellen" tshirts. Nope, didn't win any of those either. However, they did give us "guaranteed" tickets for a future show. I will be going in February...and I can't wait!

Overall, my trip to the Ellen DeGeneres Show was a good experience even though I was not able to sit in the audience for the taping. The staff was very organized and very friendly...Ellen can be proud of the people that work for her. The bathrooms were clean that's always a big plus :) Unlike when I went to The Price Is Right TV Show taping, the parking at the Ellen Show was free (another plus).

So, that's my trip to the Ellen Show experience. The short version of course :)

On a final note...I must say that I think Ellen rocks! She is one of the most kindest people that I have never had the pleasure of meeting. If there were more people in the world like Ellen, the world would be a better place.

Hello Ellen! You are great! --- one of the kindest, generous people I have met. You bring joy and positive things into people's lives. We need more of this in the world today. You should be proud of your show and the messages it sends. Your show depicts what diplomacy should look like. JoDek

I love Ellen! That was really nice of you to let your friend go in to the show rather than trying to take the spot for yourself. Your a good friend! Sounds like a fun day even though you didn't get in. :)

There are no words to express how much joy you have given my wife just by watching your show. 2012 was a tough year for us both as she was diagnosed with cancer in May and I lost my job back in February. She has recovered but still has nerve damage due to lynph nodes being cut out. We have both returned to work but we could never afford to pay for air fair putting two children through college along with the large medical bills we now have. Every day she watches the show and says "I wish some day I could go see her, I really need a vacation". Thank you again for all the help you have given our family.
