Elvis Presley Christmas Duets

Featuring Duets With Contemporary Country Music Stars

When Elvis Presley Christmas Duets was released Elvis had been dead for 31 years but that was not holding him back. In 2008 this new Christmas music album caused a sensation.

Packed with Christmas songs recorded by The King of Rock'n'Roll and contemporary country artists some of whom who were probably not even born when he died, it was definitely something for Elvis Presley fans to enjoy.

On this page, learn more about this album including how it faired on the Billboard Charts when it was released, watch some of the music videos featuring Elvis and his modern singing partners and participate in a debate about whether or not you think it is okay for modern technology to play with original music recordings. Be sure to let us know what you think.

Who Sang on the Album?

Duets included a virtual who's who from today's country recording artists:

  • Carrie Underwood
  • Martina McBride
  • Gretchen Wilson
  • Sarah Evans
  • Wynonna
  • LeAnn Rimes,
  • Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman from Little Big Town

The Jordanaires, who sang back-up on the early recordings, re-did their parts. "It's done in very good taste," the group's Gordon Stoker said. "We're doing the same background we did originally on the recordings in 1957."

"There has been tremendous excitement from the many artists contributing their voices to these Elvis Christmas classics," says Joe Galante, Chairman of Sony BMG.

In 2008, Elvis Presley Christmas Duets was Number 3 on the U.S. Top Country Albums chart.

"We are so pleased that these accomplished artists are collaborating with Elvis in this unique way to make exciting new versions of his Christmas songs. I am sure Elvis would be proud to have worked with them."

~~ Priscilla Presley

How Did They Do It?

To create these musical duets, Sony had to use some pretty advanced technology. The songs that are on the recording were originally one track mono recordings done by Elvis in 1957 and 1971 and include I'll Be Home For Christmas, Santa Claus Is Back In Town, Silver Bells and of course, Blue Christmas.

The songs are now recorded on multi-track with Elvis on one track and his voice dropped to allow room for the new voice. The recording was made in the RCA Studio B in Nashville where Elvis recorded his 1971 Christmas session.

This result was a brand-new recording for Elvis fans but one that also managed to record and preserve more of his great music for all time.

Elvis' Owns The Top-Selling Christmas Album Ever

Elvis is amongst the biggest-selling artists of holiday music every year, having sold over 25 million copies in the U.S., even though he only recorded about 20 Christmas songs. His Christmas albums show up on the holiday charts every year and his 1957 album, called Elvis' Christmas Album, is the top-selling holiday album ever with 9 million copies sold.

Elvis Presley Continued to Break and Make Records

This time, Elvis was breaking records with a highly unusual Christmas recording.

On October 14, 2008, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc., released an Elvis Presley Christmas album called Elvis Presley Christmas Duets. It was the very first duet album for Elvis and also the first CD of its type ever produced. That is, the first duets album ever created and released posthumously.

"It's amazing what they can do," Stoker said. "Elvis sounds great. The recordings sound as if they were done yesterday."

~~ Gordon Stoker of The Jordanaires

Shouldn't Elvis have a say about who he sings with?

Are you wary when they fiddle with original recordings? Fans tend to be of two minds. Some think they should leave the original recordings alone while others think that a song and an artist can be enhanced by revision and renewed popularity.

In Elvis' case, remember when they redid the little known song 'A Little Less Conversation?' Now it is well recognized everywhere you go.

What do you think? Are they messing with a good thing?

Yes, they are messing with a good thing and they should leave the original recordings alone.

yes, it can get kinda creepy. Like when's he going to sing with Justin Bieber or Beaver or whatever his name is!!!

    • anonymous 8 years ago

Looks to me like Priscilla is still trying to get all of that 10% she can get! She's no better than the Colonel. They both ran Elvis straight into the grave!

    • anonymous 8 years ago

Seems to me there's no such thing as Rest In Peace these days!

    • anonymous 8 years ago

This has nothing to do with artistic endeavour or merit. Like so many other examples since the man died, it is all about money. I cannot see that any of these recordings add anything to the memory of a truly great singer. I also believe that Presley always vetted his musical releases. I doubt he would authorise this undisguised exercise in greed.

    • anonymous 9 years ago

Elvis was a fan of Anne Murray and Wynonna Judd seems to truly appreciate Elvis as the ONE and ONLY. The rest, are as usual, gonna try and ride his coat tales. Elvis doesn't deserve that, they're are the B and C talent list.

    • PirateMummy 9 years ago

Oooo, really tough one. I'm a bit of both but leaning towards leave it alone. I like the idea of everything old being new again, but sometimes, just sometimes, i think the original can be diminished by turning it into something that sounds the same as every other song these days... I must be getting old :)

No, I think there is something to be gained by renewing a recording.

The original recordings should be preserved. I was thrilled to find "new" music by Elvis who I never truly appreciated till very late in his career. That his music may be remastered only widens his listening audience. Long live the King!

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Elvis was a great artist. This new technology provides a venue for younger people to learn about great music and is a nice alternative for older fans to enjoy elvis recordings as there is a lot of garbage present in music today.

I think experimenting is a great idea - but you have to be prepared for it to crash and not work.

      • anonymous 8 years ago

Give me a break, are you going to hold a seance? I think his estate does a very good job of protecting his memory and honoring his music.

      • anonymous 8 years ago

It's fun to hear. I'm a big Elvis fan, and actually bought the CD yesterday, and wasn't that impressed by the music. Only a few of the ladies really sounded that good with the awesome voice of EP! I don't know if it's attracting anyone new to Elvis' music, but I say it's ok with me -- I love all of his music, even the remixes.

      • anonymous 8 years ago

You can never Mess with a good thing like Elvis, I love it, and more importnat He would have loved it!!!!! wish Lisa Marie would have done one!!

      • Jimmie Lanley 8 years ago from Memphis, TN, USA

Revamping the songs will open them up to a new audience who may not know of Elvis's music. I love Elvis Christmas songs!

      • anonymous 8 years ago

no. i feel elvis had an appeal early on that recognized individuality and as far as i'm concerned none of the artist on this new duets cd embolished this originality. pump up the gd volume, man.

      • anonymous 8 years ago

Elvis rocks on through the ages!!!!

      • anonymous 8 years ago

No....I think it is a way to keep his name and memory alive. Besides RCA should keep pumping out new ideas to keep the number one hits for him coming, so he can distance himself from the Beatles even more. Like John Lennon once stated " Before Elvis there was nothing". I wish they would do a duet album with standards songs, as well. Long Live the KING..the Jackie Robinson of Music!!!!!!!

      • anonymous 8 years ago

I was bothered about this at first, then I changed my mind. I know if I were in a band and had the chance, you better believe I'd jump at the opportunity to record a song with Elvis, even if it's only slightly better than the audio equivalent of photoshop. Besides, looking at the list of artists, I kind of think the King would be cool with this. It's also a great way to reintroduce the music of Elvis to a new generation!

      • anonymous 8 years ago

First of all, Elvis did not own the masters to his recordings. Although I think the old Colonel should have negotiated Elvis' ownership of them; at least for anything recorded from 1970 and on. This given the fact that by the 1970's Elvis Presley accounted for HALF of RCA's total record sales. Because of this and the relinquishing of royalties from material predating 1973, RCA can legally do as they please with Elvis' recording catalogue. IF it's done right, this duets thing can be a good thing for Elvis as a recording artist. We Elvis fans certainly want that for him. Additionally, it will generate money and record companies are in business for that purpose. (I wish Elvis' estate would reap much of the profit since he's a big reason for the interest in this album ...) Certainly the chosen talent to sing with Elvis that have been announced are lovely ladies, very talented and I'm sure they have done their best. Time will tell how it turns out. Let's give the record a chance and wish for the best. It's the right thing to do.

      • anonymous 8 years ago

The Christmas Duets Album should be an out and out winner for THE KING. I have all of Elvis' records and personally do not mind any form of experimentation with them be it remixes or duets. In any case we will always have the originals to treasure. Elvis himself never stood still and always adapted to the new sounds of the day. In my opinion, Elvis' voice can never be bettered but quite a few of the backings can. Elvis liked a lot of background singers around him but for today's music market this is very 'old hat'. Sony are committed to producing remixes in the future and next year (2009) another 'Duets' album will be released but that one will feature both male and female artists singing tracks from the whole spectrum of Elvis' career. Sony are aiming to have as big a hit with this one as with the '30 No.1 Hits' release a few years back. Bring it on.

Personally, I can't see the harm in it, but I'm suprised anyone would still be interested apart from us old toppies!

      • greggers lm 9 years ago

You can't replace the originals, but who wants to anyway? It's always interesting to see what Elvis sounds like with someone else singing along (besides me in the truck...)

      • RuthCoffee 9 years ago

Well assuming that the appropriate people ok'd the use of his music, I guess it's ok. It's all about entertainment. I'll have to hear it to decide what I think about it's "value".
