Elysium: An Action Film or a Whole Lot More?

Updated on August 19, 2017

Elysium on DVD was released on December 17th, 2013. I think it was definitely one of the best movies of summer 2013. There was tons of action in the movie. However, it was just more than an action film. At the end of the movie I was amazed and said wow to myself many times, To me the ending was unexpected but simply amazing. The ending in my opinion was a bit sad but at least the majority of the people involved ended up being happy. I would dig into it more but I don't really want to give away the details of the movie.

What is the story behind Elysium?

The name Elysium comes from Greek mythology. The term refers to a place where the heroes and the amazingly righteous in life would spend their days in the afterlife. It was to be a place where they would spend death blessed and privileged. These were the people that were looked upon as perfect while they lived. It's was just fitting to treat them the same way in death. I think the movie takes on the same concept except the privileged ones are still alive but they are isolated from the unprivileged. It's the year 2154 and there are two classes of people. There are the rich and the privileged who live on a space station called Elysium and there are the not so privileged who live on a trashed up and seriously overpopulated planet earth. The one's on Elysium are cured of any diseases they have and live a rich lifestyle. The ones left on earth are left to suffer and die. Max Da Costa (Matt Damon) gets into a bad accident at work and only has a few days to live. The only way for him to survive is for him to sneak into Elysium. The movie then goes on his quest. The amazing thing is throughout the movie, there is character development. Matt Damon's character starts off a self centered ex con and ends up as a giving sacrificial lamb at the end of the movie. I don't want to give away anymore details just in case you didn't see the movie. I think it's a definite must see.
