Enemy Mine Is One Of My Favorite Science Fiction Films Of The 80's

Updated on November 9, 2013

I love my science fiction, and even though it's not a very popular film, Enemy Mine is one of my favorite sci fi movies of the 80's.

It didn't do particularly well at the box office, and there are many people who have negative opinions about it, but I personally cannot understand the cynicism of others in this regard.

All in, I think Enemy Mine is a fantastic sci fi package.

This movie has it all, balancing alien worlds and futuristic (yet strangely familiar) circumstances with how the characters are developed and endeared to you, never letting you forget the horrible situation they are in.

The makeup is wonderful and the narrative is captivating. At points you will laugh out loud and at other points the story is very likely to bring a tear to your eye. The special effects aren't brilliant but they're pretty good for the time.

I will admit that it isn't your typical sci fi movie, because it is more focused on the characters than it is on special effects. The story is more emotive than it is flashy and tech-y.

The plot can be likened in some ways to Robinson Crusoe... except in space, where two unlikely people, with polar opposite personalities (who in this case are also blood sworn enemies) learn to live with one another in their mutual isolation upon a desert planet. Together the human man and the Drac survive in dire circumstances overcoming many obstacles and they learn a great deal from one another. In time they become brothers.

But that is only half of the story.

The Dracs are a reptilian, asexual species and there is no choice as to when the onset of pregnancy occurs. As terrible luck would have it, the most unfortunate timing occurs. This circumstance brings a child into the mix and a whole new chapter of challenges and drama begins.

This is a spoiler free zone so I won't give any more details about the story at this point. Please be aware that Amazon reviews may not be as considerate.

As with anything, you do need to make your own opinions. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes science fiction and I would also ask that if you have heard anything negative about it, reserve judgment until you have seen it for yourself.

I have not thought of this move for a long time. But I now remember the plot and the ending. Which I will be good not to share.

@Kylyssa: I was aware of the novella but not the novel, thank you for that Kylyssa, I'll be looking into it!

I loved Enemy Mine, too. If you haven't read the novelization by Barry B. Longyear and David Gerrold you are in for a treat. The movie was based on the novella by Longyear but it grew quite a bit of depth by getting turned into a screenplay and then into a novel.
