Why I Love the Original Star Trek Series
The Star Trek Original Series was already old when I started watching it in high school (around 1979.) I have fond memories of spending an hour after school every weekday watching the original cast in their low-budget costumes on their low-budget set going where no man had gone before. Yes, I could tell the Enterprise was a tiny model dangling from a string in front of a camera at times, but I still enjoyed the show.
I really believe it was (is) the characters that make Star Trek such a strong brand. The constant sparring between Spock and Dr. McCoy, Scotty's ability to miraculously fix absolutely anything in no time at all, and even Kirk's shameless womanizing became a comfortable, predictable part of my afternoon routine.
Even my Granny joined in the fun. As soon as the theme music began, she would shout from the kitchen, "He's dead, Jim." Granny knew that Dr. McCoy would use that phrase in practically every episode.
Over the years and the subsequent movies and television spin-offs, the costumes and special effects certainly improved. Centuries passed in space, new species were introduced, Klingons became allies with the Federation, and Spock became an elder statesman (as well as a director for some of the films.) The original series, however, remained the standard to which fans were loyal.
If you have never seen the original series, you need to put it on your list of things to do. See how this whole Star Trek business got started with a low budget and only a handful of people who thought the series would amount to anything.
