Epic Movie- Was It Really Epic or Not

Updated on February 28, 2014

We were on the mall when my daughter's attention was caught by this flat screen TV displayed at Samsung. They were playing the movie Epic. Upon seeing the hummingbirds, my daughter flapped both her hands on the air and started running- she mimicked the birds but the bad thing is, she kept on "flying" like those Epic hummingbirds until she was out of sight. I was wearing heels and my younger brother needed to ran after her. Epic fail.*laughs*

Because of my daughter's epic flying, we needed to get the movie so that she will no longer fly while inside the mall imitating those hummingbirds which were seen at the beginning of the movie. When we got home, we all watched it. I was actually more excited than my daughter because I was a fan of whimsical things. I had this wild dream of becoming a fairy princess or a queen like Beyonce's role in Epic. *laughs again*

So, the movie was played now. Seeing a teenage girl on the taxi made me feel curious on what that her role in the movie is because to tell you the truth, I was more interested to know about the little men who rode on the emerald colored hummingbirds. But this girl named Mary Katherine or M.K. had a huge role in the movie. (I actually wish I was her so I can get to see the world of these little fellows. Yah, I am a sucker for enchanting things.)

My daughter was just interested with the hummingbirds. After that scene, she resorted to playing and was no longer interested in watching. Even my brothers left us in the room. I was the only one who had eyes on the movie. Well, boys are not that interested on stuffs like this. To sum it all, I finished the movie.

The Story

The movie is based on William Joyce's children's book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs. It is about a teenage girl who was shrunk to the size of the little men as she was enlisted by the queen before she died. She was given the mission to protect the bud which will bring in the next queen. So she needed to join forces with the tiny human soldiers called the Leafman to protect the bud and the forest from evil ugly insects called Boggans who want to decay the entire forest and get rid of the bud so that there will no longer be another queen.

With that, MK joined the adventure and as their mission was completed, she eventually fell in love with an independent soldier named Nod. She was then turned to her normal self again and went back to her scientist father who was thrilled to know that the little men, which he was spying on the whole time were actually real.

Epic or Not?

The plot of the story was good but not superb. It is like you can tell what's gonna happen next. It is a beautiful movie because of its whimsical characters and impressive character designs. The movie is filled with vivid colors which would attract the eyes of kids. The action scenes were engaging but not really thrilling. There are punchlines too (since it is a comedy adventure) but instead of sending you a huge laughter, you will end up with a chuckle. But yah, it was kinda funny too.

I would recommend this movie to kids ages 7-9 because at this age, kids are more imaginative. They would be interested about various worlds like what is seen in the movie. Older kids might also like this but they will not get hooked to it. They can just pause the movie for a bathroom break. Adults hmmm can also enjoy the movie as well but might prefer to do other chores than watch with the kids.

Epic is epic but not too epic that would urge you to watch it again. It is actually like a fusion of "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids", "A Bug's Life", "Avatar" and maybe even "Alice in the Wonderland". Bits and pieces from these movies can be seen in Epic. Got the idea now? Well, this could trigger your curiosity. Why not watch the movie so you will know if it is really epic or not? After all, opinions about the movie vary. Get a copy of Epic and tell us what you think of it. Who knows, you might also do an "epic flying" like what my daughter did!

In the past a films made for kids was just that, but these days a lot of the films made for younger audiences are just as enjoyable for the adults. I am proud to say that I love the animated kids movies even though I am in my 50's.

A lovely lens thats been done well
