Escape to find Journey's Greatest Hits

Updated on February 5, 2016

"Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it, anyway you want it".... did you read the words or did Journey fill your head as you read that? I can't read those words without hearing Steve Perry singing. Maybe it's because I was so young when this song played on the radio or maybe it's because my sister played every Journey album over and over at least 100 times a day. I was probably the only ten year old who knew every single word to every one of their songs. I laugh about it now but those songs mean so much to me now. When I think of my childhood, I think of Journey.

My sister is 5 years older than me. In the late 70's and early 80's, Journey was hot and Steve Perry was on fire. He had long jet black hair. Even his big nose was sexy to millions of teen fans. He had a voice like no other. Do you know how many times that they sing "Na na" in Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'? I don't remember the number but I remember my sister and her friend spending a week trying to count as they sang. I wonder if they remember?

On the stage at Summerfest

Summerfest
Summerfest

Summerfest

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I grew up, holds one of the largest music festivals in the country every summer. Top performers are lined up every year to sing at Summerfest. Of course, Journey came for a couple summers in a row. Since I was a little kid, I was forced to go, even though I didn't like the crowds and didn't really care for concerts. The only way that my sister could go was to take me along. Maybe my mom thought that she wouldn't get in too much trouble if she had to watch me. It's always very hot at the festival and there's a particular stench of sweat, alcohol, and at that time, the smell from the rides. The place was packed to see Journey. My sister and her friend sat in the front bleachers all day long and managed to stay in those front rows for the entire performance. I had met some friends and wandered around with them all day and didn't meet my sister until after the concert. Even though I wasn't anywhere near the concert, I could hear it throughout the festival grounds. Now when it's hot outside during the summer and I hear a Journey song, I'm sent back to that concert. I can smell the smells and hear the singing and I'm 10 years old again. It's a great feeling!

Memories

These are some of my favorites. When I hear them now, I still feel like I'm there watching the concerts or back in the old apartment that I grew up listening to records over and over again. I hope these videos take you back to those hot summer nights full of good memories.

Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'

This song deserves some Lovin'

When I think of Journey songs, this one takes me way back to some of my first real memories of music as something other than noise. It was a unique song that I really liked. The different tones and notes were interesting to me, even as a kid.

Long Hot Summer Days

"When the lights go down in the city, and the sun shines on the Bay..." I think this song brings back the most memories for me. Something about this song is like no other one. The sound of the instruments along with Steve Perry's voice is really something special. When I hear this song, I can feel the heat of the summer and hear the crickets chirping. The sky is hazy as the sun goes down. We didn't have air conditioning and the heat was sweltering.

Faithfully

I love this song. It's a softer, slower song. I'm sure this song has been played at millions and millions of weddings over the years. Watching the video for this one reminds me of how awesome Journey really was. They would stay faithfully in our memories forever.

Live Performance of Open Arms

Open Arms

I always felt like this song is the one where Journey went from being a heavy 70's band to an 80's sensation. It has a little lighter sound to it than their previous songs. Thanks to my sister, I was way ahead of my classmates when it came to music. This song was one of the first that I remember the other kids actually knowing and that's why I think it was one of the songs that was at the verge of their turning point.

So Many Bands on So Many Stages

I can't remember which stage was the one that Journey played on because they were all huge to me. All I know is that it was the main stage and you could hear them throughout the entire festival. They were so good and so loud. I remember my sister coming home yelling because her ears were ringing all night from the show!

Other big names that were at Summerfest during those days included bands like Kool & the Gang, Rick Springfield, the Stray Cats, and Heart. They were all very memorable shows. Huey Lewis had a record breaking show there in 1982.

Summerfest still happens every year and the music is as loud as ever. The stages are still rockin' and rollin' along with the bands and the smells still fill the air. If you love music, it just might be worth it to visit Summerfest.

Summerfest Grounds

Those are some big instruments!
Those are some big instruments!

If you loved these songs as much as I did, here's your chance to re-live those moments. It's easier than ever now to buy the old albums. I had the Greatest Hits album that was my favorite one but I like both of these because they have some songs that aren't on that one.

Infinity
Infinity

I loved this album. My favorite songs were Lights and Wheel in the Sky. This album has more of that 70's feel to it. It's a little more raw than Escape and features that great sound that was unique to that decade.

Do you love Journey as much as I do?

One of the Many Stages

Escape
Escape

This is probably my favorite Journey album next to the greatest hits one. Don't Stop Believin' and Open Arms are two of my favorites. It has a lighter, more pop sound to it. These were the songs that they played on the radio a lot.

What's your favorite Journey memory?

I just watched the documentary "Don't Stop Believin'"about the newest frontman Arnel Pineda and even he says Steve Perry is his idol. Great movie on Netflix if you want to see it. It has lots of great vintage footage, too! Best~cb

Journey was the first Big Band concert I ever went to as a teenager. "Wheel in the Sky" was always one of my favorites too. Of course now I have to thank you for causing me to start singing all the songs in my head again :)

I remember listening to Don't Stop Believing that skipped on the record. To this day we still wait for the skip when we hear it somewhere :)

Well done on the LOTD. I had not heard of Journey before and they are actually quite good, but not really my kind of music.

I love Journey! I heard Steve Perry singing when I read the words. :-) My brother was 5 years older than me, too, and I got to hear all of the great, now classic, rock music of the 70's and 80's on his dime. :-) Fun memories here!!

Congratulation on your LOTD! I loved Journey too and living in the S.F. Bay Area I got to see them in concert a lot. No one has a voice like Steve Perry.

Steve Perry's voice is a gem. World renowned as one of the best vocalists ever. My party piece is playing Don't Stop Believing on the piano, always gets the place singing along :)
